The Things I Should Have Told you by Carmel Harrington

Poignant yet immensely heartwarming.

Oh wow, where do I even begin with this one. Do you remember way back when, in the very beginning, just who it was that gently persuaded me (pushed me into 😉 ) starting this blog? Yep that’s right, it was no other than Carmel Harrington. She had self published Beyond Grace’s Rainbow and she was my first review and my very first author interview. Mmmm we should really see what we can do about getting a follow-up one of those, do you think she would oblige?

Anyway BGR as we affectionately call it was self published by Carmel back in 2012 and she has come a long way since then but if you want to know about all of that you can look back through my archives or on Carmel’s own Website.

There is something very special about following an author from the very beginning and reading their books in the order in which they are released. With every book you can see the author grow and the writing style develop and mature. I loved Carmel’s first book and the other two after it but this book, oh this book, is on another level entirely.  If I had to sum it up I would say it is a cross between Cecelia Ahern’s P.S I Love You and anything Sheila O’ Flannagan. The story flowed so naturally and at the perfect pace. At no time did I feel like I wanted a particular scene to be over or for the story to move on. It was fluid, and so extremely well told.

Map for The Things I Should Have Told You

Setting a book on a road trip is no easy feat, the research involved must have been overwhelming but it was certainly comprehensive. The detail used to describe each area was immense and made for a spectacular visual, adding to the beauty of reading.

I don’t often read a paperback, preferring instead to immerse myself in my kindle. There was nothing however going to keep me from reading this one. Right from the very beginning I was hooked, I literally could not put it down. I could tell right then that my emotions were going to be put to the test. I should have expected that really, it wouldn’t be the first time that a book by Carmel has broken me! It was funny too though. All the characters had their moments and gave me a giggle but the little boy Jamie just stole my heart and pops wasn’t far behind him!

I laughed and I cried, then I cried some more. That is how i spent my bank holiday weekend. Curled up reading a book and shutting the rest of the world out. There was food in the fridge – no one was going to starve. So as I lay on my bed today and finished this amazing book, balled up tissues in the bin beside me I felt like I had travelled Europe and had been through the mill along with the Guinness family and came out the other end a happier stronger version of myself. Why? Because while this book will make you laugh and  will definitely make you shed a tear it was also provoke many thoughts about how you can live your best life!

Sex, Lies and Rock & Roll by Sawyer Bennett
Release Date: November 14
Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/31135325-sex-lies-and-rock-roll
Synopsis
My name is Evan Scott and I am a rock god. Fame and fortune are my two best friends. I’m on an upward trajectory and nothing can stop me now.
Except for the fact that everyone wants a piece of me and I have no clue how to deal with it all. I’m being sued, pressured to sign contracts, and fending off crazy women who want to steal my virtue, all while on my first solo tour.
Well, not that I really have any virtue, but still
my life has turned bat shit crazy.
That is why I need Emma Peterson to become my attorney. She got me out of a bit of a jam once, and I know she can do it again. The only problem is that sweet, prim and totally straight laced Emma doesn’t want anything to do with me.
Not professionally, and certainly not personally. Not that I want her in that way. It would take a crow bar of epic proportions to get those legs to spread for me, I’m sure.
No, I only want her legal expertise and for her to make sense of my crazy world. It’s a good thing I have just the leverage to make her do my bidding, because her refusal is not an option.
The way I see it, all is fair when you’re dealing with sex, lies and rock & roll.

Dare Me by Rebecca Shea

Well doesn’t that picture just say it all?  Though you know me. I like to talk.

What can I say?

It has been a long time. A long time since I read a book and was really really excited about writing the review of the book. I read so many books but I don’t tolerate the ones I am not enjoying any more. If I cant get into it I just leave it. There are too many great books out there to waste my time. I had actually just given up on one such book and I was flicking through my kindle looking for something else to read, trying to see what might hold my attention when I swiped past this and then for some reason I swiped back and opened it.  I had gotten an email a few days before asking did I want an arc of this book to review. I almost said no. I had never read anything by Rebecca Shea before but then I said “sure feck it”

4 pages. That is all it took. I fell in love the Rebecca Shea. It is also around the time that I started Facebook and Twitter stalking her. 4 pages and the bottom on my stomach fell out and my heart jumped up into my throat. I even knew it was coming but it was like that car crash that you can’t look away from and yet still get a shock when it happens.

Anyone who is used to me knows I don’t get into explaining the story line, you need to read the book if you want to know what happens and believe me  – you want to know what happens.

This was one of the most intriguing books that I have read in a long time. Every now and again there would be a crumb. Just enough to get your mind working overtime – like a little hamster running on a wheel to work out just what the hell is going on.

What really sealed the deal with this book for me was the voice. Her voice. It was like reading a book that was written just especially for me. Everything about it, the humour, the use of words and the tone. It was perfect. If I was any good at writing this is the book I would want to write. She even used one of my favourite sayings – Is the pope a catholic. I’ve never heard that come out of the mouth of someone outside of Ireland. Then she mentioned Augusta National. What the hell is not to love about this book.

My favourite book of the year so far. At the weekend (payday lol) I will start on the back catalogue, I can only hope they are as good as this one.

Desperately Undo by Christine Winston

20493_388225411385880_4618814955343121086_nTHREE STARS

I finally finished reading Desperately Undone. There were errors as what people say here in the states. Spoke with the Author and she now has a second edition to this story.  Over all I give this book 3 stars. The story moves very slowly. It’s hard for me to feel a connection with Bree and Michael. I think the connection was lost by adding in  Jo and Davis as first person in the story; pulling the reader away from Bree and Michael and creating too much drama.

Main characters did get tiring and repetitive by first person repeating what occurred. Overall the story had a great idea for a plot. Wording was good. Thus the ranking of 3 stars.

Chapter One is fantastic. I felt like I was in the room and could very easily feel what Bree was going through. Once Michael was introduced and it was clear what direction the story was going, I felt that there were scenes that did not need to be there as if the author was not sure how to show and have Bree and Michael really bond. Jo and Davis takes up a lot of the scenes and is not necessary in my opinion in the story as first person.

BUT! The idea of the plot was very well thought out.

FIVE STARS

12208733_1699539466949416_4373021929224013320_n

I have no idea where to start expressing my wow astonishment towards this book. The story is amazing. Just when you think you know where the story is going you are wrong. I had one sneaking suspension about something that was occurring and I was right but wrong at the same time.

Do I see a part in the future for this book? Yes! Should there be a part two for this book? Yes! Will the writer make a part two? I have no idea.

Now when I am in love with a story I don’t write much about why I love the book to entice you to read it. Why? Because you just need to pick up the book and read it. Let the author take you down that road, not me.

Just remember this is DARK & TWISTED!

FIVE STARS

You are probably wondering why I give this short story 5 stars. First the plot is well thought out. Second the writer hooks me in the beginning. Now I am laughing at myself for using the word hook. Inside joke once you read the story. Third you can actually feel for Luna and her background. Fourth well worded. Fifth, the ending is perfect.

This is a short story and worth the ninety nine cents you will spend to read it.

The story will plagued your mind like the rest of Yolanda Olson’s stories.

Synopsis:

Sing.

That’s what I came to do.

I was prepared to do just that until I walked into my audition and saw him. Tall, mysterious, and gorgeous to boot, he was sitting at the coaches’ table with three others, ready to judge my performance, and decide my future. Yet, since I’d walked onto the stage, he continued to look at anything but me. So, I did the one thing I was there to do: sing. When I opened my mouth and let those words spill from my lips, he finally looked up. Those startling, dark eyes collided with mine with such intensity that I knew one thing for certain: I would never be the same.

I am Layne Carter, newest contestant on Rising Star, the biggest singing competition on reality television. Nothing can stop me from giving this show my all. Not my horrible diva roommate. Not the fact that I’m terribly homesick and miss my family. And certainly not my uncontrollable growing attraction to my coach, Beau Tanner, award winning country superstar. Nothing will stand in my way.

And I’m wrong.

He left to travel the world for fame and glory, but only after spurning Gabby Ward and crushing her young heart. Now Hunter Markham has come back home to the sand and salty breeze of the North Carolina Outer Banks so he can open up Last Call, a beach bar nestled among the dunes of the Atlantic.

Gabby Ward is not happy that Hunter has returned. Bitter over his rebuff years before, she’s content to stay far away from him and his dangerously charming ways.

Gabby’s well-schemed plans to ignore Hunter go up in flames when he presents an offer to her that she simply can’t refuse, throwing them together in a common quest to each reach their goals. Working together day in and day out proves to be problematic for Gabby, who soon realizes that the feelings she had for him are still very much alive. Hunter struggles to reach through to Gabby’s cold heart, all while starting a new career away from his life as a top ranked, professional surfer.

What starts out as a mutual business arrangement soon turns into a passion that neither of them can continue to deny.

Hard choices lay ahead for both of them when Hunter is offered a once in a lifetime opportunity to return to the pro surfing tour.

Choices that could destroy what they have built or take them further than they ever had dared to hope.

Happy Birthday!!

3.png

Yep that’s right. It is our birthday here at After the Final Chapters. It is hard to believe that it is three years ago since I was ‘bullied’ into starting a blog by a most wonderful friend. She also happens to be a pretty damn good author too and you should totally check her out! So Carmel Harrington I thank you!

I am also very lucky to have had the pleasure of  M joining me along for the ride. I have been busy in college this past year so most of what you have seen has been from so thank you and I send you much love xxx

I have had wonderful support right from the very beginning from some of my favourite authors, not least Lauren Blakely ,  Lexi Ryan, Sawyer Bennet and Elizabeth Reyes . Publishing houses including Haper Collins, Penguin Ireland and Random House have also playes a big part in our existence.

The readers and followers are amazing!

Now I just sound like I am practicing my Oscars acceptance speech … I would also like to thank…

Really though… it’s been three years and there is noway i can individually thank everyone. I thank you all. We will be running a giveaway event in March so sit tight while we work all that out!
