Mud Vein

Mud Vein

What it’s all about

When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken. If she wants her freedom, she has to take a close look at her past. But, her past has a heartbeat… and her kidnapper is nowhere to be found. With her survival hanging by a thread, Senna soon realizes this is a game. A dangerous one. Only the truth can set her free.

What I thought

So….the blurb. It pretty much lays it all out for you. You know what the book is about. You can gather the genre, you can get all settle in for a good read. In this case I suppose you could say it is a suspense thriller.

Ya….the blurb.

The blurb.

I didn’t read the blurb.

See all my like minded reader friends and bloggers has this book posted all over Facebook and Twitter. So one day I said feck it and I bought it. So here I am sitting at home reading and thinking em ok. I don’t think there will be too much sex in here. I was almost through part one before I had a grip on what the story had in store for me. I will admit that it took me a while to get into and I almost, ALMOST, put it away to come back to it another time. I couldn’t do it though. My DNF consists of one book and I would like to keep it that way.

I almost went to look at the blurb. I couldn’t bring myself to do that either. I have a reason that I don’t read the blurb. Sometimes it just gives too much away and spoils the story, hell I have even read blurbs that say – yes there is a happy ever after. Like wtf, why would I bother reading then?

ANYWAY. Mud Vein. Absolutely f*&king brilliant. When I got into it, I really got into it. It is ok for a book to be a slow burner. As long as the flames pick up and start to blaze then i’m good. They did. I was surprised by this book. By a revelation in this book. Tarryn Fisher is good. I am rarely surprised by revelations. I am one of these annoying people that when they are reading, the over analyse everything and read between every line and usually I can predict what is going to happen. I had not got a clue. I had in my head how the plot was going, and I was wrong. Boy was I wrong.

Mud Vein is exceptionally well written. It is dark and possibly disturbing. It will keep your mind ticking over, even when you aren’t reading it. It is one of those books that you will stand at the cooker making dinner using one hand to stir the pot and the other holding your kindle. If only we could do the same with our eyes we wouldn’t burn dinner. Just saying. There is no point in this book where the train of events is lost. Every sentence holds meaning and purpose.

It is also a profound read. There are lots of little quotes and sayings that make you think. It was most certaily an interesting read. Think Harlan Coben or Linwood Barclay. I am of course now going to have to read Tarryn’s other books. I just hope she writes her romance as well as her thriller / suspense!

Always – Review

Always

What it’s all about

Born to a prestigious political family, Avery Adams plays as hard as he works. The gorgeous, charismatic attorney is used to getting what he wants, even the frequent one-night stands that earn him his well-deserved playboy reputation. When some of the most prominent men in politics suggest he run for senate, Avery decides the time has come to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. With a strategy in place and the campaign wheels rolling, Avery is ready to jump on the legislative fast track, full steam ahead. But no amount of planning prepares him for the handsome, uptight restaurateur who might derail his political future.

Easy isn’t even in the top thousand words to describe Kane Dalton’s life after his father, a devout southern Baptist minister, kicks him out of the family home for questioning his sexual orientation. Despite all the rotten tomatoes life throws his way, Kane makes something of himself. Between owning a thriving upscale Italian restaurant in the heart of downtown Minneapolis and managing his long-term boyfriend, his plate is full. He struggles to get past the teachings of his childhood to fully accept his sexuality and rid himself of the doubts brought on by his religious upbringing. The last thing he needs is the yummy, sophisticated, blond-haired distraction sitting at table thirty-four.

What I thought

This book came to me kind of randomly. I received an email which I thought said I was receiving an ARC of Take from Ella Frank the next day. I Facebooked Kara from Two Book Pushers and asked her if she was as excited as I was. Anyway she showed me the error of my ways and I realised that the ARC is not being sent out yet. Bummer!! Anyway we started to talk about “Try” and she gave me a list of authors to read. I went on to Amazon and randomly bought Always by Kindle Alexander.

What a pick!!

God I’m good. I don’t think that any other book that I would have picked from the list of authors that Kara gave me could have even come close to being as good as this one. It was absolutely brilliant. I didn’t read the blurb, because if you are a regular here you will know that I never do. I read books because I either, like the author already, someone with similar tastes tells me to, or I like the cover. Yes I am that shallow.

I will tell you here and now that this book is a love story between two men. I am setting that out now because I know its not everyone’s cup of tea, as for me? Feck the cup and give me a pot.

Ultimately though it is a love story. A journey through a lifetime together. I was kind of worried about it going back in time as often when a book does that you can feel a bit out of sync. Not here though – the writing is excellent and not once did I feel I had gone backwards. Well maybe just once – with the frilly shirt (but I do believe my dad wore a tux with a frilly shirt at his wedding in 1979).

Always is a beautiful and poignant story. It’s love through the ages. It shows how with love, strength and compromise a couple who love each other and are prepared to work at it and work with each other can conquer anything that comes between them.

Well almost anything. Some things are just inevitable.

This is a must read for everyone. Definitely 5*

Lost in Me – Review

Lost in Me

Lost in Me

What it’s all about

Lost in Me is the first book in the Here and Now series, a spin-off of the New York Times and USA Today bestselling New Hope series. This sexy amnesia love triangle is intended for mature readers.

The last thing I remember is having drinks at Brady’s and trying to avoid eye-contact with my life-long crush—the gorgeous, unattainable Maximilian Hallowell. They tell me that was a year ago, but I have no memories of anything since then. What I do have is this ring on my finger that Max says he gave me, and this much-thinner body I’ve dreamed of most of my life. Aside from a case of retrograde amnesia, everything seems almost…perfect.

But the deeper I immerse myself into this new world of mine—planning a wedding to a man I don’t remember dating, attempting to run a business I don’t remember starting—the clearer it becomes that nothing is as it seems. Do I have the life I’ve always wanted or is it a facade propped up by secrets I don’t even know I have?

I need answers before I marry Max, and the only person who seems to have them is the angry, tatted, sexy-as-sin rocker Nate Crane. And Nate wants me for himself.

Lost in Me is not a standalone novel, as the story continues in Here and Now book two, Fall to You, releasing in June.

WHat I thought

Well now what did I think?

I read Lost in Me about a month ago now. I had of course heard of Lexi Ryan, in fact we followed each other on twitter and had quite often tweeted back and forth. We had actually tweeted – about my clumsiness and lack of grace – just before I read her book. It wasn’t until I had read the book and went lookoking for her on twitter to tell her how bloody amazing it was that I realised and put the two together!

My sister in law had asked me what to read soon after I finished. I asked her what she was looking for. She said “I don’t know. I want something different. All the books are really good but its the same sh*t every time.” Only she still wanted all that stuff too.

My response? “Lost in Me by Lexi Ryan.” It has everything I always look for. Packed with drama, angst, strong characters – you know the one you are rooting for and then the one you hope gets run over by a bus type of thing. I’m sure i’m missing something. Oh Yes. Sex. There is definitely sex. The best thing about this book though is that it is different.

Hanna has always wanted one thing. Max. She wakes up after an accident with memory loss to find not only does she have Max but she has the body she always dreamed of having. She goes back into her life – not having all the pieces of the jigsaw but still somewhat content and hopeful that all the pieces fall into place. And hopefully before her wedding.

Though when the pieces start falling into place they just don’t seem to fit as they should. She wakes up with another man in her bed. After almost freaking out she realises he poses no danger. Her heart knows this man even if her head doesn’t.

Then she gets the shock of her life!!

Nothing is as it seems to be. Or is it? I do love a bit of mind fuckery!

OK I know that’s all pretty vague. I am telling you no more. This is a book that I insist that you read. It is very well written. brilliantly thought out and definitely has your imagination working over time. Or maybe that’s just me, I am always reading between the lines trying to work out what is going on and whats going to happen next. I absolutely can’t wait until next month so I can get the next installment of this. It’s going to be fantastic! You know what they say – “careful what you wish for, you might just get it!”

After This Night – Release Day

We are thrilled to bring you the Release Day Launch for Lauren Blakely’s AFTER THIS NIGHT! AFTER THIS NIGHT is the second full-length novel from her first Erotic Romance Series, The Seductive Nights Series!

After This Night

AFTER THIS NIGHT EXCERPT:

“I wish I were there wearing your clothes right now.”

He laughed. “That’s what you want to be doing? Because I’d like to be fucking you if you were here.”

“Well, that too. But then I’d put on your shirt.”

“You like that, don’t you?”

“I know you do too,” she said.

“I do. Seeing you in my shirt and your heels is my kryptonite.”

“Oh, is that it? That’s your kryptonite?”

“Or maybe it’s just that you are,” he whispered, admitting more than he wanted to.

“I think the same could be said here.”

There was a pause, and though they were three thousand miles apart, the silence was heady. He was in a drugged-out state tonight. This woman was his pill, and closeness with her was what he craved most even as he feared she would destroy his heart. Smash it to a million tiny pieces and eat it for lunch. But he had a built-in barrier in distance, and with no trips to San Francisco on his immediate calendar he saw nothing wrong with this temporary moment of relief from the pressure inside of him from wanting her. They couldn’t be together in any meaningful way, and he couldn’t get hurt if he didn’t actually see her. Right? Right, he answered for himself.

“What are we doing, Julia?” he asked, and he was sure she could hear the longing in his tone, but he didn’t care. There was no need to hide it after they’d just broken down and pleasured themselves together.

“I wish I knew,” she said, her voice wistful and full of yearning. “I really wish I knew.”

He heaved a sigh, trying to sort out his thoughts, but his brain was a mixed-up mess and he didn’t know how to untangle all the threads. Or if he wanted to remain tangled up with her instead.

“What are you going to do when we hang up?” he asked, changing direction.

“Read a book.”

“What are you reading these days?”

“A crazy story about a guy who treks across Antarctica.”

“That does sound crazy.”

“Yeah. He’s kind of hallucinating and talking to penguins right now,” she said with a small laugh.

“Can you blame him? I have to imagine if you’re stuck in the polar ice cap that talking to penguins might be a rare source of comfort.”

“As long as he doesn’t eat the penguins I’ll keep reading it.”

“Here’s to no penguin meals in the books we read.”

“What will you do?”

“I suspect I will fall fast asleep and dream of a beautiful redhead on the other side of the country.”

“She would like that dream very much,” she said in a sweet voice, the kind that worked its way beneath all the hard edges in him, and settled deep in his heart. “Will I talk to you again soon?”

He took a fueling breath, and put his armor back on, steeling himself. “I don’t know the answer to that.”

About AFTER THIS NIGHT:

This is the conclusion of Julia and Clay’s story that began in the New York Times Bestseller Night After Night.

“Why do you like me tied up sometimes?”
“Because the way I feel for you is so out of control that this is one way for me to feel in control again.”

Their world was passion, pleasure and secrets.
Far too many secrets. But Clay Nichols can’t get Julia Bell out of his mind. He’s so drawn to her, and to the nights they shared, that he can’t focus on work or business. Only her. And she’s pissing him off with her hot and cold act. She has her reasons though-she’s trying to stay one step ahead of the trouble that’s been chasing her for months now, thanks to the criminal world her ex dragged her into. If only she can get out of this mess, then maybe she can invite the man who ignites her back in her life, so she can have him-heart, mind and body.
He won’t take less than all of her, and the full truth too. When he runs into her again at her sister’s wedding, they have a second chance but she’ll have to let him all the way in. And they’ll learn just how much more there is to the intense sexual chemistry they share, and whether love can carry them well past the danger of her past and into a new future, after this night…

Please note: This book is intended for 18+ due to dirty talk, light bondage, and lots of sexy scenes.

Desert Heat – Review

Desert Heat Final Cover

What it’s all about

Besides working three jobs, worrying about her family back home, and running from her past, the worst thing to complicate Bethany Amaya’s life further would be a romance. But after a second-run in with the irresistibly sexy detective Damian Santiago, that’s exactly what she gets. In the blink of an eye, she’s caught up in a passionate romance with one of the most intense men she’s ever met.

Awestruck for a second time by the beautiful and intriguing performer, Damian is both surprised and delighted that Bethany agrees to something he didn’t even expect to be asking for so soon—exclusivity. As things heat up, Damian’s skills of detecting and reading body language begin to raise suspicions—Bethany is keeping something from him. Try as he might to calm his suspicions, the blatant signs become impossible to ignore.

Some things are better left unsaid. At least that’s what Bethany keeps telling herself. She never imagined falling in love so quickly, and she refuses to get Damian caught up in her troubles. She knows what he suspects—sees it in those possessive eyes. With Damian’s suspicions mounting, time is of the essence. The race is on, and Bethany finds herself scrambling to fix the past before the truth comes out and Damian finds out that it’s much worse than he suspected.

What I thought

I love Elizabeth Reyes books. That is certainly no secret. I had come across and dismissed Forever Mine so many times on my recommendation list from both Kobo and Goodreads. Why did I dismiss it I hear you ask? I was just post FSoG and I was looking for smut.
Anyhoo…. Eventually I thought, this book isn’t going anywhere until I read it. Needless to say I was hooked. Not only in this book either but in the whole series. I swallowed the series. I couldn’t read it fast enough. As far as I can remember they were all out at the time so I had a Moreno brothers marathon. Then there was 5th Street and the Fate series. Neither of these were out at the time so I became just like everyone else and hanging for a new book. And don’t even get me going on Breaking Brandon – it very nearly broke me.

BUT Desert Heat. Well now that is a horse of another colour (as they say here in Ireland). It is undoubtedly an Elizabeth Reyes book. The quality of the writing is amazing as always. The story and the characters are so well-developed that we think they are our best friends. God what I wouldn’t give for Detective Santiago to be my best friend. However this is Elizabeth Reyes all grown up. If you get what I mean.
The title is so apt, cos it’s hot in the Desert – right? Its hot within the pages of this book. Scorching. I almost had to wear oven mitts to read it.
In all seriousness though. This book is the beginning of a new side to Elizabeth Reyes and I love it. I loved her books anyway and I love books of a more adult nature and if I can combine the two well then that just makes my day. Desert Heat has a dark side that we haven’t seen in any of the books to date. It has characters that have their own baggage and their own problems to deal with. And secrets. There are definitely secrets, and these have the potential to destroy any relationship that Damien and Bethany have any hope of having. If only someone would tell these characters to be honest from the get go then we wouldn’t have all this angst and drama. NOBODY TELL THEM!! What the hell would we do without all the angst and the drama.
I got this book by special delivery back in January. I had just started reading another book and I am one of those people who cannot read more than one book at a time ( I don’t get why people do to be honest). I was kicking myself and truthfully I didn’t get said book the attention it deserved cos Desert Heat was calling my name. I raced through it so fast, but then I didn’t want it to be over so I tried to drag out the last couple of chapters. Book addict problems!
One of the absolute best things about this books is that it has set us up for an invasion of Ratz. And I for one cannot bloody wait!

Did I tell you the book is awesome? You have to read this. Like yesterday. Or maybe just when it comes out on May 13 😉

OFF series

This ebook contains the following works:
• Off Sides
• Off Limits
• Off The Record
• Off Course
• Off Chance

Off Sides

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can the relationship between hockey player, Ryan Burnham, and violinist, Danny Cross survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days…

When an accident brings Emily Burnham and Nix Caldwell together, he soon learns he is not the master of his own fate. Struggling with his own pain as a wounded Marine Corps veteran, Nix tries to guard himself against Emily’s charms. He wants her in his bed, but he doesn’t want her in his heart.

Having grabbed life by the horns, Emily wants it all. But is she willing to accept just the small part of himself that Nix is offering? Or can she reach the part of his soul that he has deemed to be Off Limits?

Off The Record

When Ever Montgomery publishes an article about Linc Caldwell containing information that she received off the record, she finds herself on the receiving end of the professional hockey player’s fury. Rather than basking in the glory of exposing Linc as a shameless user of women, she finds herself at his mercy when he demands and receives retribution. Required by her editor to trail Linc for six weeks, Ever is forced to look at the real Linc Caldwell.

And she just might find that she has misjudged him.

Off Course

If their relationship was just about sex and rock n’ roll, it would be easy for Renner Caldwell and Cillian O’Bradaigh to get lost in their desires. Only their relationship is anything but a hook-up. Will lies, deceit and hidden tragedy get in the way, making the path to true love uncertain? Or will the girl whose been knocked Off Course, find her footing with the man who is teaching her it’s okay to lose control?

Renner fled to Ireland to find herself. She found a hot, Dublin musician instead.

Off Chance

He is seeking absolution.
She is seeking escape.
Together, they have the chance to become complete.

Flynn Caldwell and Rowan Page’s worlds exist miles apart, but when a chance meeting brings them together, neither of them can deny the instant pull that connects them to each other. What starts as a tiny spark eventually flares into a fire so hot, it refuses to be extinguished.

For it to work, both of them will need to jump feet first into the flames to see where it takes them, despite the risk of being burned.

What I Thought

Well well well. Is there anything better in the life of a reading addict that discovering a new author? Not that Sawyer Bennett is a new author but for me she was a new find. One day as I was browsing through my news feed on Facebook Lauren Blakely was saying how great this particular book was. I bought it, only to discover that it was part of a series. When I went looking for the first book I found the box set for the WHOLE SERIES for something ridiculous like $6/£3. As they say here in Ireland, sure it would be rude not to!

This started my love affair with the men in the OFF series. What a bunch of hotties. I couldn’t even begin to tell you which was my favourite, though I do have quite a soft spot for Nix. Sure who wouldn’t! I got so caught up in the series, I had them all read in three days. That assignment that was due? Well I was up half the night and well before the crack of dawn to do it on the day that it was to be handed in. It was so worth it though.

I love a bit of angst. Don’t you? A good story for me is always full of angst. The type that makes your stomach knot or shout at your eReader that you can’t believe the character should be that bloody stupid. Even as I write this I am replaying bits of each of the books in my mind. I adored this series. I couldn’t get enough of it and I was devastated when it ended. So what did I do? I went and found more books by Sawyer Bennett.

Unteachable

unteachable

What it’s all about

Maise O’Malley just turned eighteen, but she’s felt like a grown-up her entire life. The summer before senior year, she has plans: get into a great film school, convince her mom to go into rehab, and absolutely do not, under any circumstances, screw up her own future.

But life has a way of throwing her plans into free-fall.

When Maise meets Evan at a carnival one night, their chemistry is immediate, intense, and short-lived. Which is exactly how she likes it: no strings. But afterward, she can’t get Evan out of her head. He’s taught her that a hookup can be something more. It can be an unexpected connection with someone who truly understands her. Someone who sees beyond her bravado to the scared but strong girl inside.

That someone turns out to be her new film class teacher, Mr. Evan Wilke.

Maise and Evan resolve to keep their hands off each other, but the attraction is too much to bear. Together, they’re real and genuine; apart, they’re just actors playing their parts for everyone else. And their masks are slipping. People start to notice. Rumors fly. When the truth comes to light in a shocking way, they may learn they were just playing parts for each other, too.

Smart, sexy, and provocative, Unteachable is about what happens when a love story goes off-script.

What I thought

I’ve got to be honest here and say I almost gave up on this one. I asked one day for something to read and someone told me I had to read this. Actually, a lot of people told me I had to read this. So off I went and bought it. When I got to around the 40% mark I wasn’t all consumed by it like I usually would be and I almost gave up reading it. I didn’t for two reasons. I never give up reading a book. I can think of only one book that I have and that was a rarity. Also because people whose opinions I trust more than I trust my own told me not to. And I soldiered on.

Thank God!! Imagine I could have missed out on this fabulous book if I had just discarded it. When I hot the 50% mark everything changed. Now I must point out the book wasn’t bad up until this point, it just hadn’t consumed me as I said. That was then rectified. The story came into its own and I was enthralled. I couldn’t put down and may even have missed a class or two in college in order to get it read. Shussh – don’t tell anyone that.

I suppose forbidden love is one of those things that we all love to read and Leah Raeder has written it so well. You want it to happen but you know that it shouldn’t and it gives you a feeling of butterflies inside. You aren’t sure if you want them to do whats right or to do what feels right. Do you want them to have a happy ever after? Do you want them to get caught?

There are so many elements to this book and I am not sure which I enjoyed more. It’s not just the forbidden love and the teacher / student taboo. There are moral issues, secrets and lies, family dynamics, best friend issues, unrequited love. It delves into the world of drugs and neglect. This is a book packed full of emotion, twists and turns. And you know not everyone can get everything they want. Can they all get enough though?

I hugely enjoyed the second part of this book, and while I wasn’t overly excited by the first half I remember saying at the time that the first half as absolutely necessary to facilitate the second half. You had to have all the detail from early on to understand the actions of the characters later.

I would definitely now recommend this book to read, I also believe that the others that told me to read it did not feel the same as I did about the first half – they were hooked right from the very beginning. It actually reminded me of Tammara Webber’s Easy, so if you loved that you will love this.

One Last Push…

…. No I’m not having a baby!

Have you missed me? I have missed this. Though if I’m honest, I didn’t stop reading. It’s just not possible. I didn’t have to to review though. So I have one final assignment to finish and hand in – that would be the final puch reference and then I can officially say – I’m back.

Dear God I have so much catching up to do. All those books I have read and not reviewed. Let me tell you there are some smashers in there!

I can’t wait 🙂

Feeling Moody

Guest Post by Carol E. Wyer

(To be sung to the tune of Feeling Groovy by Simon and Garfunkel)

I’ve slowed down, can’t move too fast. I’ve got no energy that lasts
Just kickin’ round my kitchen drawers, lookin’ for chocolate, feelin’ moody

Feeling moody

Hello biscuits, what cha doin’, I’ve come to munch and do some chewin’
Ain’t cha got no remedy for me, do-it-do-do, feelin’ moody

Feeling moody

I’ve got lots of deeds to do, promises to keep
I’m spotty, forgetful and ready to sleep
Let the morning clear off, so wine time is on me

Life I hate you, all is moody

The menopause can be a tricky time for us women. (And fellas.) Don’t worry because not only can you put strategies into place to combat some of the pesky symptoms you might suffer but there is light-hearted stuff that will make you laugh.

Five tips to combat stress and moods:

Get a punchbag, hang it up in your garage and when you feel frustrated or tense go and give it a good thumping. Give it a name for added effect. (Someone who is testing your patience) then take it out. Careful you don’t hurt yourself though. I’m still undergoing physiotherapy after whalloping Mr Grumpy with gusto.

Drink wine. True. Wine improves brain power. Okay, a bottle every night isn’t to be recommended but a small glass…

Laugh. Do you really need convincing about this? Laughter, even faked laughter produces mood-enhancing hormones. I bang on about this all the time. Read a joke a day, watch a comedy video, laugh at life, read a funny book or even have a go at stand-up comedy yourself. They will all make you feel much better about yourself.

Dance. Go on! You can do it in the privacy of your home. No, not breakdancing or ballroom. Let your hair down. Have a go at belly dancing. Join a belly dancing class. They are becoming extremely popular. It provides a great workout and will get you fitter. Also guaranteed to make you feel more feminine and sexy. Excellent for you who, like me, have a wobbly belly.

Learn to play the drums. I’m not joking. Rhythmic drumming brings down stress levels. Plenty of middle-aged women are now taking it up. Leaves you calmer. Besides, who would dare annoy a menopausal woman wielding drum sticks?

I have always written stories. My early stories were for children and sported silly titles like Humphrey and the Dustbin Cats, Hurrah for Hugo! and Noir and Blanc – Two Naughty Cats. They taught French language to younger children and were accompanied by a tape of French songs, mercifully not sung by me.

I began writing for adults after my son left home. I converted his old bedroom into an office and set about writing humorous novels largely aimed at women of a certain age.

The rest is history. Following much media success with Mini Skirts and Laughter Lines, I signed the Amanda Wilson novels with Thornberry Publishing. In 2012, I was lucky enough to be offered a three book deal with Safkhet Publishing. They have published How Not to Murder Your Grumpy and Just Add Spice, and released Grumpy Old Menopause, the sister book to How Not to Murder Your Grumpy, in December 2013.

I now write full-time. When I am not working on a novel, I’ll be writing articles for magazines such as Woman’s Weekly, or blog posts for The Huffington Post and Indies Unlimited.

My books aim to encourage as many people as possible to age disgracefully and enjoy life. After all, life is short and ‘he who laughs…lasts!’
