Desert Heat – Review

Desert Heat Final Cover

What it’s all about

Besides working three jobs, worrying about her family back home, and running from her past, the worst thing to complicate Bethany Amaya’s life further would be a romance. But after a second-run in with the irresistibly sexy detective Damian Santiago, that’s exactly what she gets. In the blink of an eye, she’s caught up in a passionate romance with one of the most intense men she’s ever met.

Awestruck for a second time by the beautiful and intriguing performer, Damian is both surprised and delighted that Bethany agrees to something he didn’t even expect to be asking for so soon—exclusivity. As things heat up, Damian’s skills of detecting and reading body language begin to raise suspicions—Bethany is keeping something from him. Try as he might to calm his suspicions, the blatant signs become impossible to ignore.

Some things are better left unsaid. At least that’s what Bethany keeps telling herself. She never imagined falling in love so quickly, and she refuses to get Damian caught up in her troubles. She knows what he suspects—sees it in those possessive eyes. With Damian’s suspicions mounting, time is of the essence. The race is on, and Bethany finds herself scrambling to fix the past before the truth comes out and Damian finds out that it’s much worse than he suspected.

What I thought

I love Elizabeth Reyes books. That is certainly no secret. I had come across and dismissed Forever Mine so many times on my recommendation list from both Kobo and Goodreads. Why did I dismiss it I hear you ask? I was just post FSoG and I was looking for smut.
Anyhoo…. Eventually I thought, this book isn’t going anywhere until I read it. Needless to say I was hooked. Not only in this book either but in the whole series. I swallowed the series. I couldn’t read it fast enough. As far as I can remember they were all out at the time so I had a Moreno brothers marathon. Then there was 5th Street and the Fate series. Neither of these were out at the time so I became just like everyone else and hanging for a new book. And don’t even get me going on Breaking Brandon – it very nearly broke me.

BUT Desert Heat. Well now that is a horse of another colour (as they say here in Ireland). It is undoubtedly an Elizabeth Reyes book. The quality of the writing is amazing as always. The story and the characters are so well-developed that we think they are our best friends. God what I wouldn’t give for Detective Santiago to be my best friend. However this is Elizabeth Reyes all grown up. If you get what I mean.
The title is so apt, cos it’s hot in the Desert – right? Its hot within the pages of this book. Scorching. I almost had to wear oven mitts to read it.
In all seriousness though. This book is the beginning of a new side to Elizabeth Reyes and I love it. I loved her books anyway and I love books of a more adult nature and if I can combine the two well then that just makes my day. Desert Heat has a dark side that we haven’t seen in any of the books to date. It has characters that have their own baggage and their own problems to deal with. And secrets. There are definitely secrets, and these have the potential to destroy any relationship that Damien and Bethany have any hope of having. If only someone would tell these characters to be honest from the get go then we wouldn’t have all this angst and drama. NOBODY TELL THEM!! What the hell would we do without all the angst and the drama.
I got this book by special delivery back in January. I had just started reading another book and I am one of those people who cannot read more than one book at a time ( I don’t get why people do to be honest). I was kicking myself and truthfully I didn’t get said book the attention it deserved cos Desert Heat was calling my name. I raced through it so fast, but then I didn’t want it to be over so I tried to drag out the last couple of chapters. Book addict problems!
One of the absolute best things about this books is that it has set us up for an invasion of Ratz. And I for one cannot bloody wait!

Did I tell you the book is awesome? You have to read this. Like yesterday. Or maybe just when it comes out on May 13 😉

Announcement and cover reveal from Elizabeth Reyes

So lets kick this year off with some fantastic book news!

Elizabeth Reyes, made an announcement last night that will just warm the cockles of your heart..

Forever Yours (Moreno 1.5)

ForeverYours Amazon

Remember Angel and Sarah…..

Angel Moreno and Sarah Fiero fell in love in Forever Mine but for a couple of high school sweethearts, forever is a really long time…

Catch up with them and the whole gang in college when past insecurities resurface. As if dealing with her best friend Sydney wasn’t enough, Angel now has two more men to deal with in Sarah’s life. There’s no shortage of edge-of-your-seat, angsty drama, tears and laughter as Angel and Sarah’s love is put to the ultimate test in this addition to the Moreno Brother series.

We get to catch up with Angel and Sarah in their college years. Find out that everything hasn’t been plain sailing to get where they are today. Elizabeth Reyes is the Queen of Angst so I for one cannot wait to read this one!!

My favourites of 2013

Good morning to you all. Or afternoon / evening. You get my drift. Happy new year. I hope you were able to see out the old and bring in the new happily and peacefully. I went to my sister in laws with most of my in laws and had a great night. We weren’t going to go – we didn’t know if the kids would manage to stay awake. They are 3,4 & 6 and are usually in bed by 6.30 every night. At 23.50 we were gathering them all up to bring them in for the countdown when we realised one was missing. Poor Aidie (Aidan) had let himself into the ‘big sitting room’ and closed the door and curled up on the couch with his teddy and went to sleep. I of course went in at midnight and gave him a kiss anyway. Holly (3) and Jamie (6) welcomed in the new year but i’m not sure what they made of the flurry of hugs and kisses that came their way.

So yesterday I started a post of my Top books of 2013 but I am hopeless. I’m like a little puppy – just rub me under the chin and tickle my belly and I will be loyal forever. So instead of my brian setting off every nuclear reactor known to man due to overload with me trying to decide what to include, I am going to tell you a few of my favourites.

Tear jerker

Well this should go without saying really. I have read a few books this year that would bring a tear to a glass eye but there aren’t any that can hold a candle to my #1. Beyond Grace’s Rainbow

New Beyond Grace's Rainbow (1)

Granted I didn’t read it for the first time last year but I did read it again and it had a new chapter. Anyway this is my post and I make the rules 😉 I am only delighted with the success Carmel Harrington has achieved with BGR and I can only wait for things to get better and better for her.

Biggest book hangover

This, beyond a shadow of a doubt, belongs to Elizabeth Reyes and Breaking Brandon.

BB cover

Ever since I read Forever Mine, I have been hooked on Elizabeth Reyes’ books. Every time I read one it becomes my new favourite. Though this one I think will hold that title for a long time to come. It took me two days to pick up another book after reading this – and it wasn’t for the want of trying. I just couldn’t get my head out of the story. I’d love a bit more….

A Little Teaser

The book that made me spit out my coffee..

Haha this could only belong to M. Leighton and Everything for Us

EverythingForUs

I can’t even begin to go in to what made me spit out my coffee. You will just have to read it and see 😉
This is a fantastic series of book from Michelle, you need to get on it!

The book that most surprised me

Is surprised the right word? Probably not. Maybe the book I wasn’t expecting? You see this is why I review and not write 😉 Anyway, whether or which this is Jane Lark‘s latest book I Found You

From the very first page in this book I was hooked. I couldn’t read it fast enough. I had read Illicit Love from Jane which is a historical. I didn’t know what to expect in this genre and I was quite simply blown away. I cannot wait for more in this series.

The book that had the biggest personal impact

The wonderful wonderful Lauren Blakely and her amazing book The Thrill of It

The Thrill Of It Cover

I adore Lauren and all of her books. When I started this blog almost a year ago she supported me 100% even though at the time she didn’t know me from Adam. She is absolutely fantastic with bloggers and just her fans in general. I am lucky enough to be part of Lauren’s street team now. Anyhooooo…

There was a part of The Thrill of It that struck home with me. It even had me in tears (no not the part about being a sex addict). Then it gave me an epiphany. Then I ended up with a tattoo. Still can’t quite believe that I did it. I am not a major fan, but it’s different when it means something, right?

I blame Lauren and this book though. Have you read it? If you haven’t then you really should. I am on pins waiting for the second one!

One of my favourites of the year, just because

Belle Aurora and her book Willing Captive

18071296

The title of this book led me to believe certain things about it. I was thinking in and around Fifty Shades. I was wrong. You see I rarely read a blurb. I like the element of surprise. I have recommended this book to many people since I have read and they have all come back saying it is amazing. Thats’s because it is. I just loved it and that’s why it is up there with my best books of the year.

Another of my favourites because….

…who doesn’t like a bit of misery, right? Erin Lawless and The Best Thing I Never Had.

I absolutely loved this book from Erin Lawless. It’s about real life, coming of age, growing up and realising those people that you trust absolutely, think have your back and will always be there for you – maybe they won’t.

My #1 Best book of the year. AND EVER.

Well if you know me or read this blog at all this is a no brainer. Colleen Hoover just swept me off my feet with LOSING HOPE

Losing Hope

It is just quite simply THE.BEST.BOOK.EVER

Breaking Brandon

BB Amazon GR SW

Fate is a Moreno Brothers spinoff series.

He ruled out attachments years ago. Then one day he crosses paths with a beautiful but pampered daddy’s little princess. History has taught him one thing about women like her—steer clear.

She was starting over. She moved back to her home town, took a new job assignment, and left her past behind. For the first time in over eighteen months, she’s even intrigued by a man—a sexy but cold and indifferent drill sergeant. Despite feeling drawn to him, she has no time to figure out his inexplicable aversion to her.

Then Fate steps in one night, forcing them together. There’s a connection neither can refute, and they both consider giving into the undeniable attraction.

Fate however can also be cruel. Just when they surrender to their heart’s desires, past demons resurface in the most unexpected way, threatening the happiness neither realized they so desperately needed.

My thoughts

Ah here, I don’t even know where to start with this one! I love Brandon. Have done since way back in Sweet Sofie, and boy did he get a raw deal there. Part of me thought he should have got the girl, now I’m so damn glad he didn’t cos we wouldn’t have this story.

Breaking Brandon has all the intensity we expect from Elizabeth Reyes books. Seriously if I were to read a book by her that wasn’t all angsty and intense I would be asking questions! But WOW this book packs a whole new punch. We cross territories a little bit, turn up the heat and BAM Elizabeth Reyes actually gets better. Who knew this was possible. Every time I read one of her books I say “Best yet” but let me tell you this one is going to take a hell of a lot of beating.

I was sucker punched no less that THREE times while reading this book. I actually felt winded. Real – I didn’t see it coming an you are screwing with my heart kind of sucker punches. One particular part was like watching a car crash you knew was gonna happen but couldn’t stop. I even turned off my reader and refused to read it. I swear I even lasted about 30 seconds til I turned it on again. I did though have teeth marks on my fist cos i had it in my mouth while reading it!!

Best book yet!! Full of surprises I want to read it again for the 1st time. When you do read it allow time, I didn’t get dressed today, cancelled my plans and didn’t dress the children. They weren’t so impressed!

Elizabeth Reyes I LOVE YOU keep writing please ❤

Breaking Brandon Cover reveal..and you will never guess what!

The newest addition from Elizabeth Reyes is Breaking Brandon. Remember Brandon? He was in the Moreno brothers series. He was the guy that Sofie kissed and almost lost everything she had with Eric over. If I remember correctly alot of us almost wanted her to do it. There is just something about him thats is addictive. I wanted more of him. We couldn’t do that to Eric though. Now however Elizabeth has written him his very own story.

Breaking Brandon. Here is am going to do a cover reveal and show you a teaser pic ans then I have some very exciting news. I almost wet myself!

Abel – 5th Street #4

Abel

Coming off the worst divorce in the history of marriages, Nellie Gamboa’s looking to let loose and make up for years of neglect. When months of building sexual tension between her and the young hot boxing stud, Abel Ayala, finally peak, she makes him an offer no man would refuse.

No promises. No demands. Just pure unrestrained passion.

Abel’s training for the biggest fight of his career. He has no time for a social life, much less a relationship. So this arrangement couldn’t be more perfect. A beautiful woman asking him to help her alleviate her neglected desires—no strings attached. What more can he ask for?

As the lines between lust and something much deeper, begin to blur, Abel finds himself in an even bigger fight.

The fight to regain control of his now demanding heart

*Fanning myself*

Elizabeth Reyes did it again. I mean really, was there ever really any doubt?

Abel Ayala is Hot Hot Hot. His body – oh man! I mean he has to be fit – he is about to face the biggest fight of his life to try and take the Heavyweight title. He is so intense that he needs to blow of a bit of steam. When this is offered to him on a plate by Nellie Gamboa – well how could the man refuse. Just out the other side of the divorce from hell, Nellie has shaped up and reinvented herself. She wants to loosen up and reckons a no strings attached, hot sex affair with Abel will help her do just that. Their respective best friends Roni and Noah are up in a heap. They don’t believe they can do this without one of them getting hurt and fear what that will do the their friendships and the group dynamic.

Both Nellie and Abel are at pains to tell them they are cool with this arrangement. So when pictures show up in the tabloids with several women hanging out of Abel and Nellie has a couple of dates and Abel see’s her kiss someone else, its all cool. Right?

Haha yeah whatever!! Sparks are gonna fly and you are gonna want to be around to watch the fireworks!! With Abel meant to concentrating and keeping his head in the game how is he gonna cope when some serious shit hits the fan?

This has to be Elizabeth Reyes best book since…. well her last book. I first read Forever Mine, the first book in the Moreno Brothers Series way back last year and loved it. Then I read the second one and that was my new favourite. Well it has gone on like that ever since. Elizabeth is the Queen of angst and romance, she really is. If you have ever read one of her books, well I am confident in saying if you have read one you have read them all, I am pretty sure you will agree.

I was biting down on my fist at one stage in this book saying “no, no, no Nellie don’t do it” I was that caught up in it. Did she do it? She just might have – I guess you will just have to read it and find out.

Unputdownable. Thats what this book is. I only started it yesterday afternoon and finished it about an hour ago. The only problem is now we have to wait for the next one. Before we get Felix’s story though we get Brandon’s. Remember Brandon? He was in love with Sofie way back in Sweet Sofie, which don’t get me wrong I am dying to read but I haven’t had enough of my 5th Street boys yet. God I would love to live inside Elizabeth Reyes’ head.

Nerd girl

Noah (5th Street #1)

Noah

Meet Veronica Cruz, or Ronni as you will come to know her. At only 28 she has been virtually severed from the rest of the civilisation. After taking a career break to care for her dying mother, Veronica is now in Limbo. Her mother passed away now she doesn’t quite know what to do with herself. She wants to go back to work but has put on 40lbs and there is no way she is going back looking like that. She has turne into a frump, her clothes don’t fit her and she feels she has aged 10 years.

Enter Nellie, Veronica’s best friend. Nellie has brought Ronni a present, a pass to 5th Street. A Gym in East LA that isn’t like all those other gyms, full of love me do’s and exhibition artists. Nellie got two free 1 week passes. If her weight is the thing that is holding Ronni back from living her life then they would just have to do something about it.

Noah Quintanilla works at 5th Street, the well-known boxing Gym. He is just holding out for Jack, the Gym’s owner to let him start training, he is ready and anxious to start. Things start looking up for Noah when Jack tell him today is his luck day. He points to the two ladies and tells Noah to get to work.

Underneath the baggy clothes and extra few pounds Noah see’s not only a determination and motivation he never expected to see from Veronica but also into the heart of someone who is fast becoming one of the closest friends he has ever had. When circumstances find Noah renting a room for Veronica, he just can’t help the feelings that continue to grow. It’s not all one-sided either, but Veronica is adamant that with an 8 year age gap – there is just no question, it’s a non issue they cannot have a relationship. With Nellie’s own life hitting the skids Veronica has even more time on her hands, and now spending time with Noah not only at the gym but at home as well, she has to continually fight the feelings that just keep building in her.

After losing all her excess weight and deciding it was now time to get her life back on track, Veronica starts to make plans about going back to work and reviving her social life. With a big fight on the Horizon after months out of action due to an injury, Noah gets stuck in to his training, though is distracted every time someone tries to make a move on Veronica in the Gym.

Can Noah keep his head in the game? Will his attraction to Veronica spell disaster for his boxing career? Can Veronica stop thinking about Noah’s age for long enough to listen to her heart or is she so hell-bent on believing a 20-year-old couldn’t be on the same page as her that she may just throw away the best thing to ever happen to her?

Welcome back Elizabeth Reyes, we have missed you! Hot off the heels of the delectable Moreno Brothers we are now in East LA with the boxers of 5th Street Gym. Wow, what my imagination can do with the tasty descriptions of these boys. I’m fanning myself here as I write. If you were a fan of the Moreno Brothers then you will just love 5th Street. We meet Noah, Gio, Hector and Abel. Four boys sure to get the heart beating faster.

All the intensity we have come to expect from Reyes is there in spades. You can almost feel all the emotions bouncing off the page (or in my case screen ;)). Noah has it bad for Ronni, but what the hell can he do to get her to see that he is ready. He might only be twenty, but when you were brought up the way he was age doesn’t mean shit. She has to realise that life experience doesn’t come with age, hell there are men out there ten years older that aren’t half the man he is at 20. But how is he going to make her see that. Veronica can’t help the building attraction or how she feels when she is with him but there are other things she has to concentrate on first, like getting back to work, reviving her social life and get her confidence back.

As the lines start to blur with, good night kisses and lingering hugs – how will Noah react to Veronica’s social life plans. Will he manage to get her to give in to her heart, prove to her that age is just an illusion or is her stubbornness and her dinners with her ex going to break Noah’s heart and ruin the best relationship he’s ever had?

I absolutely love this book, and the best thing is that when you read this there are two more waiting for you. I have read them and I can’t recommend them highly enough. I started Noah on Friday and finished Hector today, and already I am pining for Abel. It is due later this year and Elizabeth Reyes assures me its her longest book. I for one can’t wait!

You can buy Noah on Kobo Amazon, Barnes and Noble and iTunes
