My favourites of 2013

Good morning to you all. Or afternoon / evening. You get my drift. Happy new year. I hope you were able to see out the old and bring in the new happily and peacefully. I went to my sister in laws with most of my in laws and had a great night. We weren’t going to go – we didn’t know if the kids would manage to stay awake. They are 3,4 & 6 and are usually in bed by 6.30 every night. At 23.50 we were gathering them all up to bring them in for the countdown when we realised one was missing. Poor Aidie (Aidan) had let himself into the ‘big sitting room’ and closed the door and curled up on the couch with his teddy and went to sleep. I of course went in at midnight and gave him a kiss anyway. Holly (3) and Jamie (6) welcomed in the new year but i’m not sure what they made of the flurry of hugs and kisses that came their way.

So yesterday I started a post of my Top books of 2013 but I am hopeless. I’m like a little puppy – just rub me under the chin and tickle my belly and I will be loyal forever. So instead of my brian setting off every nuclear reactor known to man due to overload with me trying to decide what to include, I am going to tell you a few of my favourites.

Tear jerker

Well this should go without saying really. I have read a few books this year that would bring a tear to a glass eye but there aren’t any that can hold a candle to my #1. Beyond Grace’s Rainbow

New Beyond Grace's Rainbow (1)

Granted I didn’t read it for the first time last year but I did read it again and it had a new chapter. Anyway this is my post and I make the rules 😉 I am only delighted with the success Carmel Harrington has achieved with BGR and I can only wait for things to get better and better for her.

Biggest book hangover

This, beyond a shadow of a doubt, belongs to Elizabeth Reyes and Breaking Brandon.

BB cover

Ever since I read Forever Mine, I have been hooked on Elizabeth Reyes’ books. Every time I read one it becomes my new favourite. Though this one I think will hold that title for a long time to come. It took me two days to pick up another book after reading this – and it wasn’t for the want of trying. I just couldn’t get my head out of the story. I’d love a bit more….

A Little Teaser

BB_Teaser

The book that made me spit out my coffee..

Haha this could only belong to M. Leighton and Everything for Us

EverythingForUs

I can’t even begin to go in to what made me spit out my coffee. You will just have to read it and see 😉
This is a fantastic series of book from Michelle, you need to get on it!

The book that most surprised me

Is surprised the right word? Probably not. Maybe the book I wasn’t expecting? You see this is why I review and not write 😉 Anyway, whether or which this is Jane Lark‘s latest book I Found You

From the very first page in this book I was hooked. I couldn’t read it fast enough. I had read Illicit Love from Jane which is a historical. I didn’t know what to expect in this genre and I was quite simply blown away. I cannot wait for more in this series.

The book that had the biggest personal impact

The wonderful wonderful Lauren Blakely and her amazing book The Thrill of It

The Thrill Of It Cover

I adore Lauren and all of her books. When I started this blog almost a year ago she supported me 100% even though at the time she didn’t know me from Adam. She is absolutely fantastic with bloggers and just her fans in general. I am lucky enough to be part of Lauren’s street team now. Anyhooooo…

There was a part of The Thrill of It that struck home with me. It even had me in tears (no not the part about being a sex addict). Then it gave me an epiphany. Then I ended up with a tattoo. Still can’t quite believe that I did it. I am not a major fan, but it’s different when it means something, right?

I blame Lauren and this book though. Have you read it? If you haven’t then you really should. I am on pins waiting for the second one!

One of my favourites of the year, just because

Belle Aurora and her book Willing Captive

18071296

The title of this book led me to believe certain things about it. I was thinking in and around Fifty Shades. I was wrong. You see I rarely read a blurb. I like the element of surprise. I have recommended this book to many people since I have read and they have all come back saying it is amazing. Thats’s because it is. I just loved it and that’s why it is up there with my best books of the year.

Another of my favourites because….

…who doesn’t like a bit of misery, right? Erin Lawless and The Best Thing I Never Had.

I absolutely loved this book from Erin Lawless. It’s about real life, coming of age, growing up and realising those people that you trust absolutely, think have your back and will always be there for you – maybe they won’t.

My #1 Best book of the year. AND EVER.

Well if you know me or read this blog at all this is a no brainer. Colleen Hoover just swept me off my feet with LOSING HOPE

Losing Hope

It is just quite simply THE.BEST.BOOK.EVER

What it’s all about

Tomorrow is for regrets. Tonight is for being together.

On a cold winter night, Rachel and Jason’s lives collide on Manhattan Bridge. She’s running from life, he’s running toward it. But compassion urges him to help her.

His offer of a place to stay leads to friendship and trouble. There’s his fiancée back home in Oregon and a family who just don’t trust this girl from the wrong side of the tracks.

But when the connection between them is so electric, so right… everyone else must be wrong. And as the snow begins to settle on the Hudson, there’s nothing but the possibility of what could be – of this, right here, right now. Them

What I thought

Earlier this year I read the Jane Lark book Illicit Love and I really liked it. I was even surprised at myself. So when I sat down to read I Found You I expected the same style of writing. I was blown away. This was by Jane Lark but it was like reading a brand new author.

I Found You is an amazing book. It is dark and edgy yet flirtatious and even made me laugh. Its such a combination that made me not want to put my kindle down at all. It is that kind of book that gives you a knot in your stomach because you are anticipating what is going to happen and either you really really want it to happen or you really really don’t. I think Jane portrays the characters fantastically and she takes her time to delve right in under their skins, she doesn’t just hit you with an overload of information right away. Which in turn will make you use you imagination – trying to figure it all out for yourself. That’s what reading is all about, right?

At the end I just didn’t feel like the story had finished. However a quick tweet to Jane Lark herslef (who I might add always responds to tweets) told me that I need not worry – not only will there be a second book but a whole series of them. I do believe the Bitch herself is getting a story too! Who is the bitch? You will see just as soon as you have read it.

Illicit Love – What they say:

Unknown-95‘Ellen Harding longs to be free of the life she is trapped in – her husband died at the battle of Waterloo and her family disowned her and now she lives under the reign of a cruel protector. When her eyes are drawn to a beautiful man for no other reason than his looks, she imagines escaping her chains for a night by giving her body to him – to a man of her choosing – even if only to infuriate her captor.

But Edward Marlow is kind and gentle when he touches her and her subconscious whispers that this man could save her. Yet how can he help her when she has secrets which prevent her ever being free. She has too many battles to fight.

Edward is restless, lonely and a little angry with his lot in life – it is his only excuse for being drawn to another man’s mistress. The woman’s dark hair and pale eyes are striking and he cannot take his gaze off of her while she watches him over the top of a fan with an illicit intent in her eyes. But once he’s known her he cannot forget her – and once he’s seen how brutal her protector is, how can leave her with the man? But she will not run anymore than she will speak of her past, so how can he help her…’

In my humble opinion;

Historical romance was never my thing. I could not however pass up the opportunity to join in this blog tour so I thought ‘bring it on’. I must be honest and say I already had it pinned in my head as one of the ‘Mills & Boon’ books I used to see in my mums possession when I was growing up. You know the type I am talking about, the maiden on the front and the tall dark handsome man swooping in. No way, not this book. I am trying to think of a way to describe it and my head keeps saying ‘Downton Abbey with balls’. You don’t get this type of sex and scandal in Downton but the setting seemed just about right even if Illicit Love is set quite a bit earlier.

It took me a chapter or so to get used to the language in the book but once I did I was hooked in the story. I wondered what the big secret was and how he was going to rescue her. There were a lot of avenues in the book which Jane Lark led us down beautifully and at just the right pace. No part of the story was rushed and yet no part was dragged out. Everything was explained in ample detail yet the descriptions were not over long. In fact everything was described so well and I was so invested in the story that I at one stage hitched up the skirt on my sundress as if I myself was about to mount a horse. Not likely – ever!

I loved the main characters, Edward and Ellen. Ellen at first seemed so confident and even a bit mischievous while Edward seemed like a man whose ego needed no boost. We came to find that Ellen had many masks that she would wear depending on the need. She was not at all the confident vixen she at first portrayed she was in fact a fragile woman who had suffered horrendously at the hands of many men. With Edwards kindness, tenderness and love she is able to find her true self and the journey we take with the two is heart wrenching.

Other characters were introduced in the book that I equally enjoyed although I did feel as though there were questions opened up about Robert – Edwards brother that needed to be cleared up. This got me excited as I thought excellent he must be getting his own book. I tweeted Jane Lark and she confirmed my suspicions and I will say to you what I said to her – I bet it will be epic. I absolutely loved Illicit Love but I have the felling that Roberts story, whatever it will be called, will knock our socks off! Watch out for this September 13th!

Even if you think Historical Romance is not your thing I would urge you to read ‘Illicit Love’. You never know you might just change your mind. As for me I am off to read ‘Captured Love’ and reacquaint myself with one of the supporting characters! Happy reading.

Captured Love – What they say:

‘Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, is missing his cousin’s company. He has too many burdens weighing down his shoulders, including the task of finding his sister, Rowena, a husband.

Meredith Divine has one friend in all the world, Lady Rowena Stanforth. She clings to their friendship as though it is a rope, when she is drowning in a lake of social isolation. Even Rowena’s elder brother cannot stand Meredith. Everyone judges her poorly, simply because her father is in trade. But despite Lord Morton’s constant rejection, Meredith’s heart still favors Rowena’s proud, judgmental brother.

Lord Morton would break the friendship his sister has with Miss Divine if he could, but the more he disparages Miss Divine, the more Rowena favors the girl. He’s ceased his complaints, in the hope the friendship would wither and die, believing the girl would make a wrong step soon. He just did not anticipate what that step might be…’

About the Author: 396571_511573772204817_47496660_nJane is a writer of authentic, passionate and emotional love stories. She began her first historical novel at sixteen, but a life full of adversity derailed her as she lives with the restrictions of Ankylosing Spondylitis. When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write. You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane’s favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book that drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was ‘Katherine’ a story crafted from reality. Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots. ‘Basically I love history and I am sucker for a love story. I love the feeling of falling in love; it’s wonderful being able to do it time and time again in fiction.’ Jane is also a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development in the United Kingdom, and uses this specialist understanding of people to bring her characters to life.
