THE LIFE YOU LEFT
Carmel Harrington
3rd July 2014 | PB £8.99 | EB £1.99

“Sarah, I’m not coming home tonight.
If you love me, you will give me the space I need…
Tell the children I love them.
– Paul”

A story of redemption and the strength of love from the author of BEYOND GRACE’S RAINBOW,
perfect for fans of Jojo Moyes and Cecelia Ahern.

It started out like any other day for Sarah Lawler; getting the kids ready for school, making the packed lunches
and juggling baby Ella’s feeds. There was no way of knowing that her husband, Paul, would leave for work
that morning and simply not come home.

Now the questions are piling up quicker than the unpaid bills and, unable to answer her children’s questions
about where their Daddy is, Sarah is getting desperate. But it turns out she isn’t quite as alone as she thought
she was. When her beloved childhood friend, Edward, comes back into her life, Sarah thinks she’s finally been
thrown a life line.

There’s just one problem with Edward: no one else can see him.

Edward is an angel. And he has a message for Sarah that will change her life and the lives of others forever.
For it is only in the most difficult of times that Sarah can discover how strong she truly is.

Don’t you just love that cover? It’s one of my favourites!

What I thought

Oh wow. I really don’t even know where to start with this one.

Anyone who reads this blog often will know that Carmel Harrington is not only an author that I greatly admire and look up to but also a great friend in real life. I often read the things people are writing about her and think but its just Carmel. Thing is ‘just Carmel’ is becoming a sensation and now we have to share her with the world. But that’s OK. The stuff she writes needs to be shared with the world.

I have read this book many times. And every time has been better than the last. How? I hear you ask. Quite simply it is because each time it was different. I think I have read maybe 4 versions of the story and have known it to have three titles. Its amazing really how much a story can change from the first draft to the final published version.

Anyway back to the book.

For those of you that read Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, wondering if maybe Carmel was just a one hit wonder (as if), well here is your answer screaming loud and clear. The Life You Left is a fantastic read. Havign read it first over a year ago I couldn’t wait for it to be released. As I have said there have been many changes since then and the book I fell in Love with just completely swept me away. Carmel has a unique writing voice. It is all her. In face when I was reading it often I could her here saying the words that were on the page in front of her. I think that is why her books are so good. It isn’t an effort from her, it never feels forced or that writing it is a chore. Its almost as if she sits down and the words just flow. Its like she really is telling a story to you.

It is an effortless read. You will be trapped in the pages, unable to put it down. It is though provoking and poignant. You have characters that are going to quite simply piss you off, you will want to throttle them through the pages. You will also have characters like Sarah who will warm your heart and Ruby that will make you laugh. And maybe cry. Just a little bit.

I remember all that time ago texting Carmel and saying, “I think it might even be better than Beyond Grace’s Rainbow”. That though is for you to decide!!

Book 2, The Life You Left, has just been released. Can you believe it?

Its beginning to sink in Tanya. It’s such a weird feeling. You spend months and months working on the book, then months and months waiting for it to be published. When the day arrives, its quite surreal. Did I really do that? Did I write that book? Best feeling in the world now that its sunk in!

Tell us a little about the book. Not giving anything away, of course.

Well, its about Sarah, a wife and mother, who thinks her life is all mapped out. But then suddenly everything changes. Her husband Paul goes missing. She has financial issues. And then to top it all, a childhood friend of hers, Edward, returns to her life, with a message that will ensure that life is never ever the same again.

We know how the story of Beyond Grace’s Rainbow came to you, how did you come about the idea for this book?

One of the themes in the book is that of angels and I’d always wanted to explore this in a story, as I grew up with a grandmother who was always reading books about them! Then, a few years ago, at a time when I was having a tough time, a woman walked up to me in a shopping centre and grabbed my hand and told me that I was surrounded by an angel, who had so much love for me and was looking after me at this difficult time. She then walked away as quickly as she appeared. That incident stayed with me. The woman looked for nothing from me, she simply gave me a message. Sarah’s story came from that.
Then one morning whilst walking on our local beach, I heard a noise, that frightened me and I allowed my writers imagination to take over and I came up with a key scene from the book – a murder on the beach!

Did you find a big difference with this book, having an editorial team to work with?

Absolutely. With Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, it was 100% my book. With this one, my editor was deeply invested in the story and in her words, she wanted to ensure that I wrote a worthy follow up to BGR. So the edits from Harper Impulse were detailed and I am very grateful for them. I really believe that with my editors sharp eye, she helped me write a better novel.

How did you feel knowing that people had Pre-ordered your book on the back of having read Beyond Grace’s rainbow?

Grateful. Overwhelmed. Lucky. Happy. And truth be told, a little scared. I hope that I don’t let down any of my BGR fans.

I saw many pictures on Facebook that people had posted with your book cover on their kindle. Did that feel surreal?

Tanya, its the most wonderful feeling in the world to see a direct result of months and months of hard work, in that little picture. But yes, it does feel surreal too. I appreciate so much everyone sharing their pictures with me, each one I get a kick from. I’ve the best supporters.

The paperback releases on July 3rd. Do you have anything planned to celebrate the release?

Oh yes. I get to have a very posh book launch at a castle no less! On 28th June, I will be in Enniscorthy Castle to launch The Life You Left, with a wine and cheese reception.
I cannot wait. On the 3rd itself, I will be in Waterford to do two radio shows and I intend to have lunch with my dear friend Tanya!!!
Then in the afternoon I have a book signing in two bookshops. I’ll be busy, but happy busy.

Now that one dream has come true, do you have another?

Yes. Actually I’ve several. The most immediate is that I make the Irish Bestsellers Paperback Charts. I have been an eBook bestseller, for both books now, I’d like to make the top 10 in the paperback charts if I can.
After that, my big dream is to have BGR or TLYL made into a movie. Nice thought eh?

Is there another book in the works yet?

I’ve a couple on the go Tanya! But the one I need to finish next is a sequel to BGR, a kind of what happens next for Abby and Gerry mainly. I’m so excited about this book. Its like catching up with old friends.

Is being a published author everything you thought it would be?

Yes and more. It’s harder work than I thought it would be. But its way more fun!

What advice do you have for those starting out?

Keep writing and don’t stop till you see the words, ‘The End.’

How much of yourself goes into each book?

Hmmm…that’s an interesting question. I think that its impossible not to have parts of me interweaved into certain characters – Grace and Sarah in particular might have teeny, tiny, parts of me. But when I write, I immerse myself completely into the lives of my characters and I worry for them, celebrate with them and ultimately want the best for them. Unless they are called Mal or Michelle. (When you read TLYL you will see why I said that!)

How do you manage to balance writing and family life? Especially now with summer coming?

Sometimes Tanya I’m not sure that I do. I feel guilty a lot. The house isn’t clean enough, I never bake anymore, lots of little things that I used to do when I had more time. But when the children are home from playshool, I’m 100% Mummy. We play together, we have a lot of fun and its quite wonderful. I work long hours. Its not unusual for me to get up at 630am and not go to bed till 12am. Sometimes later.

July 2012 when you self published Beyond Grace’s Rainbow, could you have imagined what would come next?

Never. I could visualise myself getting a book deal. I had faith that would happen. But all the other stuff, the awards, the tv appearances etc, no I never imagined any of that.
I’m having the time of my life. I’ve met so many people through writing, some of which have become dear friends of mine, you included! I feel very blessed.

Fall To You – Review

Fall to you

What they say

Torn between two men…

When I woke up after the accident, I couldn’t remember anything from the last year—including my relationship with Max Hallowell or anything about Nate Crane. Now my memories are returning, but instead of answering my questions, they’re leaving me with more.

The man who broke my heart and wants to be my future…

Max is all I ever wanted, and now he wants to marry me. He’ll do everything he can to fill my life with love, family, and security. I need those things now more than ever. But can I trust him?

The man who stole my heart and wants to let me go…

Nate never made me promises, and I never asked him to. I’d been on the rebound, looking for a distraction, and he made me feel beautiful and wanted when I needed to feel those things most. He says he has to let me go, but what if I can’t let go of him?

With every revelation and every passing day, I feel more like Alice down the rabbit hole. I’m falling. Who will catch me?

Fall to You is the second book in the Here and Now series. It is not a stand-alone and is intended to be read following Lost in Me. Hanna’s story concludes in book three, All for This.

What I say

Poor Hanna. She just hasn’t got a clue what to do. I can’t imagine being in her predicament. Her mind is telling her one thing, her heart another. To make matters worse – people around her are lying to her to try and spare her, or make decisions for her.

Then you have fate. We all know fate will either make things easy for you or completely screw you over.

Hanna is trying her best to get on with her life. She is also trying to work out who the father of her baby is. I mean, she is a virgin – right? Wrong. BUT which of the men did she sleep with, and why haven’t they admitted it. The fate gives her another cruel blow, cos she hasn’t been through enough yet. Of course I am not telling you what it is.

Hanna makes a decision, believes its the right one. Then comes the sucker punch. You gotta love it really.

I love Lexi Ryan. I love her style of writing and just how quickly she sucks me in to her books. The characters are so believable. I really didn’t like Max. In fact when I started reading this book I sent Lexi a tweet. I think it was a tweet, It went along the lines of “I do not like Max, I do not trust Max. DO NOT make me like Max.” Of course she had me liking Max. How the hell can you sit on the fence between these two??

are you fucking kidding me

Several times I screamed in frustration, a few more i slapped the cover of the kindle closed in lieu of throwing it across the room. That would just be silly. Of course I would open it again after about ten seconds. And as for the end? I screamed ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME.

Please do excuse the language. Or don’t. Whatever

I do love a cliffhanger though. I would also love the next installment.

What does Mandy write about?  Hot Heroes – emotional reads! Mandy is an award-winning romantic fiction author, writing humorous chick-lit, through to heart-pulling contemporary romance and action-packed romantic suspense. There is always a gorgeous leading man at the core of the story. Dialogue-driven romance with strong characters and real life dilemmas since 2008.

In 2012 she won the Innovation in Romantic Fiction award at the UK’s Festival of Romance. Her self-published title, Strings Attached was also short-listed for the Best Author Published Read award.

Also in 2012 she signed with American publishing house, Sapphire Star Publishing, who produced her novels, Taking Charge and romantic suspense, Security.

In June 2013 she signed a two-book deal with Harper Collins’ digital first romance imprint, Harper Impulse.

MandyBaggot“My name is Mandy Baggot and I’m addicted to hot men! If I wasn’t a writer I would probably get in real trouble for the amount of time I spend drooling over male models on the internet. But it’s all in the name of research, honest!

I’ve been writing romantic fiction since I was in senior school but never believed I could make a career out of it. But back in 2010 I took the plunge and left my job as a Probate paralegal at a firm of solicitors and became a full-time author. The roles couldn’t have been more different. Tax forms and reconciling bank statements or handsome heroes and international settings? Hmm…

Now, here I am, having self-published five books and been traditionally published for four books (and counting!). I am doing my dream job and I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be able to say that.

My real life romantic hero is my husband, Mr Big. I admired him from afar for a while, then spent ten years grinding him down until he realised I really should be his Mrs Right. Determination is one of my strengths! Now we have two daughters together and live in the tranquil Woodford Valley in Wiltshire very close to Sting – although he’s never been round for a cup of sugar.

When I’m not writing delicious leading men I can be found with my head in my Kindle or belting out a tune on You Tube. I’ve always had a love of music and singing and it’s never left me. And, with my guitarist husband, we’ve been entertaining at parties just recently. I’m that embarrassing mum that sings loudest at school concerts and isn’t afraid to shake her booty in public.

I love country/rock/pop – you name it I probably have a song of it on my iPhone. But just lately I’ve been listening to some traditional Greek music. I like to think of Corfu as my second home and I’ve been lucky enough to visit there twice a year for the last three years. I love the culture, the sunshine, the people – I feel so relaxed there and it’s a brilliant place to get writing inspiration.

So when I’m not dribbling over sexy men, or listening to music, or reading on my Kindle or embarrassing my children or sunning myself in Corfu I will be dreaming up my next hot plot and a leading man to die for…or maybe drinking wine…or eating sausages… “

What I say:

Well for anyone who follows this blog or knows anything about me, will already be aware that I love a book that comes with an explicit content warning 
Reach For Your Light is a perfect summer read. Once you begin the story you will fly through it. Its one of those stories that you don’t feel the time ticking by or notice the pages turning.
The book is home to very interesting characters. Sexy ones too, always a bonus – don’t you think? I mean what good is a book without a tall, dark and handsome smouldering stranger – or someone to the same end. Someone to dream about, whether you are asleep or not – if you know what I mean.
The story was mysterious and intriguing. I was hooked and wanted to know was it going to be more of the same, as in the same as a lot of the other books out there, or was there going to be more to it. Thankfully it was the latter.
I know a cliff-hanger is something you either love or hate. Thankfully I love one, and in this case it sets us up perfectly for book two!

Mud Vein – Review

Mud Vein

Mud Vein

What it’s all about

When reclusive novelist Senna Richards wakes up on her thirty-third birthday, everything has changed. Caged behind an electrical fence, locked in a house in the middle of the snow, Senna is left to decode the clues to find out why she was taken. If she wants her freedom, she has to take a close look at her past. But, her past has a heartbeat… and her kidnapper is nowhere to be found. With her survival hanging by a thread, Senna soon realizes this is a game. A dangerous one. Only the truth can set her free.

What I thought

So….the blurb. It pretty much lays it all out for you. You know what the book is about. You can gather the genre, you can get all settle in for a good read. In this case I suppose you could say it is a suspense thriller.

Ya….the blurb.

The blurb.

I didn’t read the blurb.

See all my like minded reader friends and bloggers has this book posted all over Facebook and Twitter. So one day I said feck it and I bought it. So here I am sitting at home reading and thinking em ok. I don’t think there will be too much sex in here. I was almost through part one before I had a grip on what the story had in store for me. I will admit that it took me a while to get into and I almost, ALMOST, put it away to come back to it another time. I couldn’t do it though. My DNF consists of one book and I would like to keep it that way.

I almost went to look at the blurb. I couldn’t bring myself to do that either. I have a reason that I don’t read the blurb. Sometimes it just gives too much away and spoils the story, hell I have even read blurbs that say – yes there is a happy ever after. Like wtf, why would I bother reading then?

ANYWAY. Mud Vein. Absolutely f*&king brilliant. When I got into it, I really got into it. It is ok for a book to be a slow burner. As long as the flames pick up and start to blaze then i’m good. They did. I was surprised by this book. By a revelation in this book. Tarryn Fisher is good. I am rarely surprised by revelations. I am one of these annoying people that when they are reading, the over analyse everything and read between every line and usually I can predict what is going to happen. I had not got a clue. I had in my head how the plot was going, and I was wrong. Boy was I wrong.

Mud Vein is exceptionally well written. It is dark and possibly disturbing. It will keep your mind ticking over, even when you aren’t reading it. It is one of those books that you will stand at the cooker making dinner using one hand to stir the pot and the other holding your kindle. If only we could do the same with our eyes we wouldn’t burn dinner. Just saying. There is no point in this book where the train of events is lost. Every sentence holds meaning and purpose.

It is also a profound read. There are lots of little quotes and sayings that make you think. It was most certaily an interesting read. Think Harlan Coben or Linwood Barclay. I am of course now going to have to read Tarryn’s other books. I just hope she writes her romance as well as her thriller / suspense!

Desert Heat – Review

Desert Heat Final Cover

What it’s all about

Besides working three jobs, worrying about her family back home, and running from her past, the worst thing to complicate Bethany Amaya’s life further would be a romance. But after a second-run in with the irresistibly sexy detective Damian Santiago, that’s exactly what she gets. In the blink of an eye, she’s caught up in a passionate romance with one of the most intense men she’s ever met.

Awestruck for a second time by the beautiful and intriguing performer, Damian is both surprised and delighted that Bethany agrees to something he didn’t even expect to be asking for so soon—exclusivity. As things heat up, Damian’s skills of detecting and reading body language begin to raise suspicions—Bethany is keeping something from him. Try as he might to calm his suspicions, the blatant signs become impossible to ignore.

Some things are better left unsaid. At least that’s what Bethany keeps telling herself. She never imagined falling in love so quickly, and she refuses to get Damian caught up in her troubles. She knows what he suspects—sees it in those possessive eyes. With Damian’s suspicions mounting, time is of the essence. The race is on, and Bethany finds herself scrambling to fix the past before the truth comes out and Damian finds out that it’s much worse than he suspected.

What I thought

I love Elizabeth Reyes books. That is certainly no secret. I had come across and dismissed Forever Mine so many times on my recommendation list from both Kobo and Goodreads. Why did I dismiss it I hear you ask? I was just post FSoG and I was looking for smut.
Anyhoo…. Eventually I thought, this book isn’t going anywhere until I read it. Needless to say I was hooked. Not only in this book either but in the whole series. I swallowed the series. I couldn’t read it fast enough. As far as I can remember they were all out at the time so I had a Moreno brothers marathon. Then there was 5th Street and the Fate series. Neither of these were out at the time so I became just like everyone else and hanging for a new book. And don’t even get me going on Breaking Brandon – it very nearly broke me.

BUT Desert Heat. Well now that is a horse of another colour (as they say here in Ireland). It is undoubtedly an Elizabeth Reyes book. The quality of the writing is amazing as always. The story and the characters are so well-developed that we think they are our best friends. God what I wouldn’t give for Detective Santiago to be my best friend. However this is Elizabeth Reyes all grown up. If you get what I mean.
The title is so apt, cos it’s hot in the Desert – right? Its hot within the pages of this book. Scorching. I almost had to wear oven mitts to read it.
In all seriousness though. This book is the beginning of a new side to Elizabeth Reyes and I love it. I loved her books anyway and I love books of a more adult nature and if I can combine the two well then that just makes my day. Desert Heat has a dark side that we haven’t seen in any of the books to date. It has characters that have their own baggage and their own problems to deal with. And secrets. There are definitely secrets, and these have the potential to destroy any relationship that Damien and Bethany have any hope of having. If only someone would tell these characters to be honest from the get go then we wouldn’t have all this angst and drama. NOBODY TELL THEM!! What the hell would we do without all the angst and the drama.
I got this book by special delivery back in January. I had just started reading another book and I am one of those people who cannot read more than one book at a time ( I don’t get why people do to be honest). I was kicking myself and truthfully I didn’t get said book the attention it deserved cos Desert Heat was calling my name. I raced through it so fast, but then I didn’t want it to be over so I tried to drag out the last couple of chapters. Book addict problems!
One of the absolute best things about this books is that it has set us up for an invasion of Ratz. And I for one cannot bloody wait!

Did I tell you the book is awesome? You have to read this. Like yesterday. Or maybe just when it comes out on May 13 😉

About The Breakup Artist:

‘Demi Shepherd is going to jail.

As a professional heartbreaker, she’s been charged with the murder of one of her clients. She can’t explain how fifty thousand dollars ended up in her bank account, how her fingerprints were found on the murder weapon and who called in an anonymous tip labeling her as the murderer. Determined to clear her name and find out who uprooted her life, Demi goes on the run and turns to the least likely of allies: the man she believes set her up for murder.

Jack Austin is Demi’s only chance of clearing her name, but as an undercover organized crime agent, whose only goal is to bring down the organization laundering money through one of Vegas’ casinos, he’s not willing to risk his life or career for her. That is until Demi shows her innocence.

With former clients and victims on her trail and unknown shooters finding her every step of the way, Demi fights for her life and her damaged heart, but will Jack protect either?’

One Last Push…

…. No I’m not having a baby!

Have you missed me? I have missed this. Though if I’m honest, I didn’t stop reading. It’s just not possible. I didn’t have to to review though. So I have one final assignment to finish and hand in – that would be the final puch reference and then I can officially say – I’m back.

Dear God I have so much catching up to do. All those books I have read and not reviewed. Let me tell you there are some smashers in there!

I can’t wait 🙂
