Illicit Love – What they say:

Unknown-95‘Ellen Harding longs to be free of the life she is trapped in – her husband died at the battle of Waterloo and her family disowned her and now she lives under the reign of a cruel protector. When her eyes are drawn to a beautiful man for no other reason than his looks, she imagines escaping her chains for a night by giving her body to him – to a man of her choosing – even if only to infuriate her captor.

But Edward Marlow is kind and gentle when he touches her and her subconscious whispers that this man could save her. Yet how can he help her when she has secrets which prevent her ever being free. She has too many battles to fight.

Edward is restless, lonely and a little angry with his lot in life – it is his only excuse for being drawn to another man’s mistress. The woman’s dark hair and pale eyes are striking and he cannot take his gaze off of her while she watches him over the top of a fan with an illicit intent in her eyes. But once he’s known her he cannot forget her – and once he’s seen how brutal her protector is, how can leave her with the man? But she will not run anymore than she will speak of her past, so how can he help her…’

In my humble opinion;

Historical romance was never my thing. I could not however pass up the opportunity to join in this blog tour so I thought ‘bring it on’. I must be honest and say I already had it pinned in my head as one of the ‘Mills & Boon’ books I used to see in my mums possession when I was growing up. You know the type I am talking about, the maiden on the front and the tall dark handsome man swooping in. No way, not this book. I am trying to think of a way to describe it and my head keeps saying ‘Downton Abbey with balls’. You don’t get this type of sex and scandal in Downton but the setting seemed just about right even if Illicit Love is set quite a bit earlier.

It took me a chapter or so to get used to the language in the book but once I did I was hooked in the story. I wondered what the big secret was and how he was going to rescue her. There were a lot of avenues in the book which Jane Lark led us down beautifully and at just the right pace. No part of the story was rushed and yet no part was dragged out. Everything was explained in ample detail yet the descriptions were not over long. In fact everything was described so well and I was so invested in the story that I at one stage hitched up the skirt on my sundress as if I myself was about to mount a horse. Not likely – ever!

I loved the main characters, Edward and Ellen. Ellen at first seemed so confident and even a bit mischievous while Edward seemed like a man whose ego needed no boost. We came to find that Ellen had many masks that she would wear depending on the need. She was not at all the confident vixen she at first portrayed she was in fact a fragile woman who had suffered horrendously at the hands of many men. With Edwards kindness, tenderness and love she is able to find her true self and the journey we take with the two is heart wrenching.

Other characters were introduced in the book that I equally enjoyed although I did feel as though there were questions opened up about Robert – Edwards brother that needed to be cleared up. This got me excited as I thought excellent he must be getting his own book. I tweeted Jane Lark and she confirmed my suspicions and I will say to you what I said to her – I bet it will be epic. I absolutely loved Illicit Love but I have the felling that Roberts story, whatever it will be called, will knock our socks off! Watch out for this September 13th!

Even if you think Historical Romance is not your thing I would urge you to read ‘Illicit Love’. You never know you might just change your mind. As for me I am off to read ‘Captured Love’ and reacquaint myself with one of the supporting characters! Happy reading.

Captured Love – What they say:

‘Rupert Stanforth, Earl of Morton, is missing his cousin’s company. He has too many burdens weighing down his shoulders, including the task of finding his sister, Rowena, a husband.

Meredith Divine has one friend in all the world, Lady Rowena Stanforth. She clings to their friendship as though it is a rope, when she is drowning in a lake of social isolation. Even Rowena’s elder brother cannot stand Meredith. Everyone judges her poorly, simply because her father is in trade. But despite Lord Morton’s constant rejection, Meredith’s heart still favors Rowena’s proud, judgmental brother.

Lord Morton would break the friendship his sister has with Miss Divine if he could, but the more he disparages Miss Divine, the more Rowena favors the girl. He’s ceased his complaints, in the hope the friendship would wither and die, believing the girl would make a wrong step soon. He just did not anticipate what that step might be…’

About the Author: 396571_511573772204817_47496660_nJane is a writer of authentic, passionate and emotional love stories. She began her first historical novel at sixteen, but a life full of adversity derailed her as she lives with the restrictions of Ankylosing Spondylitis. When she finally completed a novel it was because she was determined not to reach forty still saying, I want to write. You might think that Jane was inspired to write by Jane Austen, especially as she lives near Bath in the United Kingdom, but you would be wrong. Jane’s favourite author is Anya Seton, and the book that drew her into the bliss of falling into historical imagination was ‘Katherine’ a story crafted from reality. Jane has drawn on this inspiration to discover other real-life love stories, reading memoirs and letters to capture elements of the past, and she uses them to create more realistic plots. ‘Basically I love history and I am sucker for a love story. I love the feeling of falling in love; it’s wonderful being able to do it time and time again in fiction.’ Jane is also a Chartered Member of the Institute of Personnel and Development in the United Kingdom, and uses this specialist understanding of people to bring her characters to life. Sinfully Summer

Sinfully Summer

Alexa Green is that girl. She is the trust fund baby splashed across the papers every week in an outrageous display of drunken antics. Flashing her knickers – when she is wearing them, draped around some random guy or falling out of some trendy club or other she has the reputation of a spoiled rich bitch.

While on a ‘last fling’ holiday with her two best friends before they get married things don’t start out much different. Staying in an exclusive hotel in Marbella owned by the delectable Enrique Castillo its champagne and dares all round. What she doesn’t count on is her dare is going to leave her standing in only her underwear in the penthouse occupied by none other than Mr Castillo himself.

Setting off a chain of events that must open old wounds to enable them to heal this is a journey for both of them that will be funny, painful and sexy!

Sun, sea, sand, sex and scandal. What more could a girl want?

It is a well-known fact that I don’t do comedy and while Sinfully Summer by Aimée Duffy isn’t a comedy it had me laughing the whole way through. It was very witty with quite a sarcastic humour – that I can relate to! Both main characters are quick-witted, passionate and firey. From the very first pages you will be enthralled and feel the chemistry cracking from your reader, do not be alarmed it is not short circuiting, these two are just that hot!

A lot of more serious issues come in to play in Sinfully Summer and while as a whole the book is light-hearted Aimée Duffy certainly isn’t afraid to delve into more serious darker waters. A well-balanced entertaining sexy read!

Out of Breath

Out of Breath

“Emma leaves Weslyn and everyone in it behind to attend Stanford University, just as she always intended. A shell of her former self, she is not the same girl. She is broken, and the only way that she’ll be whole again is through forgiveness. Emma must find a way to forgive herself and recognize her own worth before she can receive the love she deserves. This final installment will have readers holding their breath until the very last page.”

Ordinarily I give my own run down of the synopsis of the book but in this case I chose not to. Out of Breath is the final book in the Breathing trilogy by the hugely talented Rebecca Donovan. As the third book I felt that if I were to give my own version of the story I would risk not only giving away too many spoilers but ruining the whole trilogy for those who have not yet started it.

I didn’t review the first two books; Reason to Breathe and Barely Breathing as I was a little late to the party. I found them with thanks to another blog, way back when it hadn’t crossed my mind to start one. I actually found quite a lot of my books on there and I owe a debt of thanks to Maryse as without her I wouldn’t have found all these fabulous authors! So thank you Maryse, you rocked my reading world!

The first book, Barely Breathing is without a doubt the most intense book I have ever read, I found myself holding my breath while flipping through the pages, I think I may even have broke into a sweat during parts. You tend to forget that it is fiction and get engrossed in the storyline. For this reason alone I am glad I was late to the party as I just went straight into the second book. Again this book was intense but for different reasons. I found myself screaming at the books and almost in fear of what Emma was going to do. Did she not realise that Evan was the one for her? How could she get so close to Jonathan. Oh hear I’m getting all worked up again. As I said Rebecca Donovan is a seriously talented lady.

What a way to end book 2 and what a way to kill us! I have been waiting around 8 months for the final instalment but there are many out there that waited a lot longer so I should be grateful. I got the book as soon as I could on Monday and tried and failed miserably to read with the kids running rings round me. Bedtime couldn’t come quick enough. I started Monday night and finished Tuesday night. WOW. While to me, the first book will always be the best the third and final book was nothing short of spectacular. No stone was left unturned, no questions were left unanswered. For the first couple of chapters I found it hard to place certain events, I could have easily read the first two books again as a refresher but I didn’t think of it before release day and there was no way I could wait. I thought going into it that it would be lacking something, it couldn’t possibly be as good as the other two. Once however I got back the feel for the characters I was transported straight back into the lives of Emma and Evan. There were enough reminders throughout the book to jog your memory of events while at the same time they weren’t in your face repetitions, just nice subtle hints dropped here and there.

I rushed through reading Out of Breath and then come the end of it I was sad it was over. It was a great end to the story that has had many people gripped since 2011. Not everything in life runs smoothly and not everyone has an easy path to follow and I think it is important that our reading reflects this!

Well done Rebecca, I cant wait to see what is next!

I would just like to add that I ALMOST got through a whole book without crying. I did I swear. Then I read the acknowledgements and I found myself crying! They really are lovely.

Confessions of a Chalet Girl

confessions of a chalet girl

Holly Buchannon needs to get away from it all for a while. Herself and her best friend Pippa secure jobs ant the exclusive Swiss ski resort Verbier. Holly just wants a change of scenery but Pippa wants to snag herself a millionaire. Life has other ideas when Pippa falls in love with a penniless mechanic and is now pregnant. Faced with a choice to return home to her mother or go it alone she decides to head off to Switzerland on her own.

As soon as she gets there she realises she will never fit in. She puts on her game face and tries her best to fake it. She meets a handsome stranger who seems to be able to look into her eyes and see her soul and she instantly feels a connection to him. Turns out he isn’t going to be such as stranger after all as this fine specimen turns out to be her new boss.

Who said Ski season is cold? Certainly not Lorraine Wilson.

I was going to refer to Confessions of a Chalet Girl as the perfect light summer read, only it happens to be lashing outside. you catch my drift though, right?

If I am reading a book with the intention of reviewing it I don’t usually read other reviews first. I don’t like to be swayed one way or another before I read the book. I had no idea what to expect from it. As a novella it was like an extended short story, which in itself is a shame because I would have happily read more about Holly and Scott. Though in saying this there were no wasted words and no gaps in the story. It was a lovely book, very well written and extremely enjoyable.

I am excited though that this is only the first in a series of books set around Chalet girls so I can only hope that we don’t leave Holly & Scott’s story here but will catch glimpses of them in future books.

These ladies are killing me!!

There is just no room!!

What’s a girl to do when a new book comes out and it is her new favourite? My top three is quite an extensive list. But there can only be three in a top three can’t there?

That’s the best thing about us women. We are problem solvers. We make things fit. Hell we could get a square peg into a round hole if we needed to.

My top three used to be;
1. Beautiful Disaster (read my review here)
2. Hopeless (read my review here)
3. Reason to Breathe
Not necessarily in this order I must point out. Each time I re read any of the books I am reminded of just how much I love them and it goes back to the top of the list.

Then we had Barely Breathing. How the hell am I mean to squeeze another book in there. I could relegate one to 4th place. That would be the logical thing to do. The normal thing even. I couldn’t do it though. I wouldn’t want to hurt the feelings of any of the books. Yes, I know. I have issues (I remember sleeping on the floor and being cold as a child because I put all my teddies in the bed so they wouldn’t get cold).

BAND THEM TOGETHER!!
Perfect. I had the best solution. Barely Breathing is the second book not a ‘new’ book so I would just put them together.

So my new list;
1. Reason to Breathe / Barely Breathing
2. Hopeless
3. Beautiful Disaster
Simple.
No, not so much. Jamie McGuire went and brought out Walking Disaster. Again I just band them together. So here we go again;

1. Beautiful Disaster / Walking Disaster
2. Reason to Breathe / Barely Breathing
3. Hopeless
So I have 5 Books in my top 3 books. Sure that’s not too bad. Of course then next week Colleen Hoover is bringing out Losing Hope, which I have had the pleasure of reading. It has overtaken my number one spot. So my list now looks like this;

1. Hopeless / Losing Hope (read my review here)
2. Beautiful Disaster / Walking Disaster
3. Reason to Breathe / Barely Breathing.

Losing Hope is at the moment my all time favourite book. So I would imagine my list will be staying like this. At least until tomorrow when Rebecca Donovan’s Out Of Breath comes out!

Losing Hope

ohmygodohmygodohmygod.OH.MY.GOD

Losing Hope

Did I say Oh My God?

We have been patiently waiting for Losing Hope, which is Hopeless from Holders point of view. I got my hands on it Thursday and I was like a giddy child. In fact I almost got whiplash when I saw Colleen Hoover‘s post on Facebook that it was available on NetGalley. I loaded t straight up but it was mid night and I had to go to sleep knowing I was going to have a very early morning wakeup call. I had been glued to it ever since and read the last few pages this morning (Sunday).

I normally start a review by giving a brief run down of the storyline. You all know this storyline however. I would like to take this opportunity to say that if you have not yet read Hopeless then you have no business reading Losing Hope and I mean that in the nicest possible way. I also mean that you need to go get Hopeless (you can read my review here), read it and get your ass back here to read about Losing Hope.

I decided as I wiped the last tear off my face this morning that I was going to write the review straight away. Hopeless was already in my all time top three books. It was amazing, so intense and you just didn’t know where it was going to take you. This book however, in my humble opinion, blows Hopeless out of the water. I almost feel as though I am betraying the book by saying such a thing. The intensity of Hopeless was 75% Holder and 25% where the story was going, so if you can imagine the same story told from Holders own perspective, well freakin’ hell.

I don’t know if I am getting my point across too well. Losing Hope kicks ass. Right now it is occupying the #1 spot in my list.

There is so much going on in Holders head that we had no idea about. He was broken, like seriously broken. Colleen Hoover found the best way to portray this, through a diary of sorts. Through getting everything down on paper and working through things in his head he is able to deal with his feelings for Sky and work out just what it is he needs to do. Sky puts him back together and by the end of the story between Sky, his mother and Les he is whole again. That’s what we wanted for him. If you fell in love with Holder even just a little bit in Hopeless then be prepared to fall hard and fast in Losing Hope. There is nothing that will save you.

Have the tissues ready girls. There is nothing going to make you cry like a broken man!

To read an interview I did with Colleen back in February click here.
P.S I feel sorry for all of you that have to wait til July 8th but be assured, it’s worth it!

Lauren Blakely -The interview

Who is Lauren Blakely?

I’m just a smalltown girl, living in a lonely world. Sorry, I was practicing my karaoke song! Though, truth be told, my karaoke standards are Sweet Child of Mine and Living on a Prayer (much like McKenna in Trophy Husband). But seriously. I am a wife, a mom, a daughter, a sister, a dog person, a writer, a ghostwriter, a reader and a cheerleader for my friends! I love romantic comedy flicks, witty TV shows, and really goofy humor. I also love happy endings. Most of all, happy endings.

Tell us a bit about your books.

My three novels are Caught Up In Us, Pretending He’s Mine and Trophy Husband and they’re sexy and sweet, fun and flirty, new adult and contemporary romances.

Is it necessary to read Caught Up In Us and Pretending He’s Mine before reading your new book Trophy Husband?

Nope! Don’t you want to though? *bats eyes* But the hero in Trophy Husband is the brother of a supporting character in both Caught Up In Us and Pretending He’s Mine – Jill – who will be the lead character in my next release, Playing with My Heart.

You just released Trophy Husband, how do you feel in the days running up to a book being released?

Nervous, emotional, a total crying wreck! Wait. I’m cool, calm and collected. (Said no author ever).

Do you get nervous when it comes to reading the first reviews of a book?

Definitely! I try to stay away from reviews, but that’s pretty much impossible, so I just hope that readers like my books and are entertained by them enough to leave lovely, gushing reviews!

What is your preferred genre to read?

Romance! Romantic comedy, sexy romance, erotic romance, new adult romance, and young adult romance.

I’m guessing romance lol

What do you think has started the New Adult craze?

What I love most about the New Adult craze is it’s reader-driven. As soon as new adult novels started hitting the virtual shelves, readers snapped them up. I believe that’s because there’s been a gap in the shelves. Young readers who grew up loving young adult novels wanted something a bit more adult as they became older. New Adult stepped in, and readers said YES. WE WANT THESE BOOKS.

When you wrote your first book, did you find the road to publishing daunting?

Yes.

Do you hold any superstitions?

If I can, I try to unroll the car windows when driving across a bridge. You know, in case I crash into the water and the only way I can escape is through the car windows because then I’d be pissed if the power windows weren’t operating while the car was submerged. Well, I guess not that pissed. I’d probably be dead. How’s that for a morbid superstition!

I have read that you love toast? I am a firm believer that tea and toast is one of the most satisfying things to eat. What do you like to put on your toast?

I adore you. Yes! Toast and tea! I can’t start the day without toast and tea. I have my toast with butter, and I drink Jasmine Fancy green tea every morning. I am a creature of habit, and I love this habit!

If you couldn’t live in California where would you like to live?

Paris!

Do you have a motto you live by?

Yes. Karma is real. Be good.

What three luxuries could you not live without?

Pedicures. Visits to the salon every five weeks. And fancy chocolate.

Trophy Husband

Trophy Husband

It is the night before her wedding and fashion blogger McKenna Bell is delivered the mother of all blows. By voicemail. Her boyfriend of 6 years and soon to be husband has met someone in Vegas, and MARRIED HER. She is younger than McKenna and a ‘Trophy Wife’. After molly coddling herself for longer than she really should she decides it’s time to get on with her life. Of course then life delivers a kick up the ass when she runs in to him in her favourite donut shop, a haven that he had not previously tarnished. Until now.

Deciding it’s time to get herself back in the game she decides to set about finding her very own ‘Trophy Husband’. The man who will fulfil this role will have to meet strict criteria. As she isn’t exactly old herself her TH must be aged 21-23, exceptionally hot but must also have a brain.

McKenna’s blog is hugely successful, so much so it’s become a cable show. She uses this platform to propel her quest for the perfect TH. As most of the dates she goes on turn out to be as dull as dish water Chris McCormick enters the scene. He is SMOKIN HOT. Unfortunately he doesn’t fall under the age criteria. And McKenna could imagine losing herself in him. That isn’t the aim here; she isn’t looking for love, loving could mean losing which will result in having her heart all over again.
What is to become of McKenna’s hunt for the perfect Trophy Husband, how will Chris factor into her plans and is she going to stay on her game and make it down the aisle this time?

Trophy Husband is Lauren Blakely’s third novel. Already a New York times Best Selling author Lauren found herself right back there when Trophy Husband entered the top 20!

If you have read the previous two Caught up in Us and Pretending He’s Mine then I don’t need to tell you that you are in for a treat. Chris is actually the brother of one of the supporting character in the other two novels, Jill, and I am happy to say she will be having her own story told soon. You don’t need to have read Lauren’s previous book before this one but I do suggest you put them on your ‘to read’ list cos they are damn good.

I was reading the book and enjoying it immensely and I have to admit, while blushing, that I did a fist pump and shouted “YES” when Chris entered the scene. There is a small build up before we find out his identity and I was sitting saying please please please. He is so damn lovable right from the very start.

Trophy Husband is well written and never goes off point; it’s a real feel good book which will have you rooting for the characters from start to finish. It definitely has the right humour, serious, angst ratio. I read it in a day – I just couldn’t bring myself to put it down. The only problem I have with the book is that it ended. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye 😦 and I can only hope there will be more about Chris in Jill’s book. Please….

I had fully intended to review this book before now and I even interviewed Lauren immediately after the books release. Such is life that I couldn’t get around to reading it until now but I do hope that you enjoy the interview all the same. To read my interview with Lauren Blakely please click HERE

Trophy Husband is available from Amazon Smashwords Barnes and Noble

I Wished For You

I wished for you

Every girl wants to grow up, meet Prince Charming and get married, right?

“I Wished For You is the story of Grace who is at that age where there are six weddings a year and the question on everyone’s lips is: who’s next? She and her boyfriend Robbie seem the perfect fit, but when he unexpectedly goes down on bended knee, Grace freaks out. Cue the mother of all meltdowns.

On top of that, Grace’s passion for fashion is not exactly fulfilled by her job – dressing well-to-do ladies with way more money than style. Cue – in her addled state after the bended knee fiasco – losing it in work, with disastrous consequences.

Into Grace’s train-wreck of a life comes Verity – ex-Hollywood costume lady and vintage clothing queen. Verity is not called the Vintage Vixen for nothing: she has seen it all and done it all and her life makes Grace’s look about as exciting as Songs of Praise. Verity tells Grace that the secret of happiness is to discover her ‘heart wish’. If only Grace could work out what her heart’s greatest wish really is … ”

amy huberman

I Wished For You is the second novel from Best Selling Author Amy Huberman. Amy is a Wife, Mother, Actress, Writer and a damn funny lady! You may have read Amy’s other Novel, Hello Heartbreak which was a No1Best Seller back in 2009. If not, why not?

I have issues with humour, regularly told that I am lacking in that department. I would make a comment and I am told “Ah go away you don’t even like Father Ted”. I admit it, I don’t. So shoot me. For this reason I was a tad apprehensive about reading I Wished For You. I wondered how I was going to read a book that was funny and not be in pain. So within the first few pages I was in pain, my sides were hurting. This book is HILLARIOUS. I knew it would be funny, I follow Amy Huberman on Twitter and have for quite a while. The woman is a comedy genius but then I don’t need to tell you that. It took me a few minutes to snap out of ‘serious Tanya’ as I had just a couple of hours before finished reading The Herbalist by Niamh Boyce. Chalk and cheese. Once i got my head around the fact that this was a funny book I loved it.

It’s just my type of humour, for the record I do believe I possess a sense of humour. When I confided my worries about reading this book my good friend Carmel Harrington told me I had a fantastic SOH. Good enough for me! I had a lot of ‘did she really just say that – out loud?’ moments and a lot of cross your legs cos you are laughing so much moments. Yes I did just say that.

I read it described as ‘Hot chocolate on a snowy day’ by Swati Sharma on Goodreads. I agree, with whipped cream and marshmallows on top!

This book is a must read for those who like a bit of fun, have a wicked sense of humour and even those like me that have an awful sense of humour. I can’t wait for more from Amy Huberman.

I have one copy of ‘I Wished For You’ to give away. If you would like to win it then just leave a comment on this post to say so! Easy as that. Winner will be picked at random on Saturday.
